Quasar Quest, Part I

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 1

Original Airdate: 2-6-1999

Last Time: Andros killed Zordon and thus wiped out all of the forces of evil...except for those we'll be seeing in this episode and the ten seasons that follow.

The narrator lays down some exposition, it's the near-future and the people of Earth...well, let's just say the people of America, have decided to find a new planet. Meanwhile, on a distant planet, some old man is telling a tribe of stone-age looking people about some fancy swords that kicked a lot of ass 3000 years ago, and are waiting for the right people to draw them out of the stones they are currently encased in. He then turns to today's applicants, who each try to draw one of the swords and fail. In this distance, some goons that we will soon know as the Sting Wingers, are approaching the village. More warriors try and fail to take the swords.

The Sting Wingers eventually get to the village and start their attack, they're led by an evil dude who appears to have stuck part of a lemon on his head. He too tries to take one of the "Quasar Sabers" and fails. Credits! The credit for Bulk and Phenomenus is ominously without mention of Skull.

High above the Earth, the space colony of Terra Venture is orbiting. The commander is being briefed by some guy named Mike. I looked it up, and the commander's name is Stanton. Anyway, Commander Stanton exposits that Terra Venture is leaving the Earth in eight hours. He and Mike go into a lab and meet Kendrix, who is disappointingly only twenty minutes ahead of schedule on some sort of fruit experiment. They head to the bridge, and Mike ponders the majesty of the Earth, Commander Stanton encourages him to get a good look, because he won't ever see it again. Commander Stanton is kind of a downer.

On Earth, people are cramming some terminal in order to get passage onto Terra Venture and get the hell off of Earth. Phenomenus and Bulk are there, and Bulk feels like they're forgetting something. At home, Skull is sleeping through an alarm. Goodbye Skull, it just won't be the same without you. Some grunts throw Leo, our future Red Ranger, out of the terminal for not having the proper paperwork. Outside, Leo is pissed. He just wanted to go to spaaaaace! Nearby, an old woman is menaced by some thugs. They want her passport so they can get onto Terra Venture. I think people might be suspicious if three thugs claims to be one old woman. Leo shows up and beats up the thugs, because well, you have to meet violence with more violence. I'm pretty sure Jesus said that.

Eventually Leo is overcome, but he had already hidden the passport, so the thugs run off empty-handed. The old woman thanks Leo for his help and is sorry that he can't go with her on the voyage to the stars. Not sorry enough to give him her ticket, though. Leo looks at some posters advertising Terra Venture and seemingly has an idea.

On Terra Venture, Mike is discussing how he, Kendrix, and Kai have one more training exercise on the moon left before the colony takes off. Back on Earth, Leo has decided that he must sneak onto Terra Venture, for the good of the people, and sneaks onto a luggage compartment flying to Terra Venture.

Meanwhile, the evil red monster, who's name is Furio, is still trying to steal one of them Quasar Sabers, but is having a rough time at it. On a shuttle, Leo is still trying to sneak onto Terra Venture and moves to the passenger compartment. He uses the opportunity to look at Terra Venture, which kind of resembles a rejected design for a Starbase from Star Trek.

The shuttle docks, and Bulk is really, really sure that he forgot something. Bulk and Phenomenus realize that they've left Skull behind and will never see him again. Leo passes them by as they grieve. Some security officers spot Leo and pursue him. Leo runs away....to where I have no idea. I mean, it's a closed system, there's really nowhere to run to. He runs into Kendrix, who appears instantly smitten. Kai breaks the two up, because he fears the idea of children with gigantic jutting chins that would surely ensue. Leo walks away and the security team asks Kendrix and Kai if they saw him. Kendrix claims they haven't and makes Kai agree.

Leo continues his ultimately pointless escape...well, I guess his point is to wait it out until the colony leaves Earth forever, and then apply for amnesty. Leo has the brilliant idea to dress up as a soldier, which leads to him being sent to the moon for the training exercise.

The troops are all arrayed in gear that appears to have been bought from Starship Troopers. Commander Stanton gives a speech about something, and ends by demanding that they never leave a teammate behind. On the moon, the exercise begins, and it suddenly becomes obvious that everyone should be dying of asphyxiation as no one brought a respirator or an ozygen tank. The exercise seems to principally be composed of running around and firing guns while explosions go off in the background. Leo notices one of the explosives, planted as part of the training exercise, and has to rush him and Kendrix out of the way before it goes off. Kendrix realizes that Leo is the stowaway from before and is delighted to see him. Kai rushes over and is less-enthused to see Leo. Mike shows up and is least-happy of all because Leo is his loser little brother. Mike rightfully thinks that his brother shouldn't get to go on Terra Venture, and Leo counters by re-expressing his desire to go to space.

On that planet from before, Maya is running from some Sting Wingers. The Sting Wingers shoot some lasers at her, miss and therefore open a portal to the moon. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. What? Leo and company are also confused about the hell this couple possibly have happened as Maya runs into them. I'm going to go ahead and guess the writers couldn't think of a way to bring the two plots together and eventually someone just shouted out "Moon portal-lasers" and everyone just went with it. The Sting Wingers follow her and the first fight of the season breaks out. Everyone has guns, but they refuse to use them, and instead rush into battle with the bugs. Kai eventually realizes that guns=good and ends the fight quickly. The portal to Maya's planet, Mirinoi, is still open. Maya asks for their help, but Kai isn't too keen on going to an unknown planet. Mike decides to go with Kendrix, but won't let Leo go with him, because of Leo sucking and all. Leo, being Leo, decides to go anyway and Kai doesn't really care enough to stop him. To Be Continued!

Next Time: Something actually happens!
