Forever Red

Power Rangers: Wild Force, Episode 34

Original Airdate: 10-5-2002

Last Time: Animus took away all of the zords....then changed his mind ten minutes later and pretended that it was all a test.

Okay, guys, this one is going to be a doozy, if only because trying to work in ten Red Rangers in twenty-two minutes, while also setting up why they and only they can stop a new threat is basically impossible. If there ever were a Power Rangers story that needed two parts, it's this one. Then again, the primary purpose of Power Rangers is to sell toys, and those toys get cycled out of the toy stores in a matter of months, so I can understand, from a purely economical standpoint, why they'd want to limit this to one part. Think about it this way, there are an infinite number of alternate realities, and that means that there are countless universes where this was a two-parter. Hell, there are countless universes where it's a three-parter. Actually, come to think of it, since there are an innumerable number of universes where any event has happened, that means that there are billions of universes were Forever Red was the only television program ever made. Wait, where was I going with this?

On the Moon, some Beetleborg rejects are ordering some Cogs (the mooks from Zeo) to excavate something that Lord Zedd left behind when he fled the Solar System. A guy in a cloak who happens to be Andros, watches and realizes that this might be a problem. Andros tries to run but get spotted by two of the villains, who choose to chase him....on horseback....on the moon....On the plus side, having lunar-based robots utilize light calvalry is something that's never been done before. Andros calls for his Galaxy Glider and gets out of there.

Somewhere on Earth, Bulk and Skull have returned! They're now working as bartenders at some sort of resort. Wait a minute, for the entire Lost Galaxy season, it was pounded into the audience's head that no one could get back to Earth from Terra Venture, and Bulk was on Terra Venture the whole time. It was stupid at the time, but the writers held fast to it. Now I'm not a continuity nerd or anything, but this episode is basically continuity masturbation, so you'd think you wouldn't want to fuck something like that up.

Anyway, the phone rings, and Bulk accidentally knocks Skull into a nearby swimming pool. Ah, those were the days. But, the episode then elects to depress me in a profound way, as it turns out that Bulk and Skull now work for Tommy at his resort. That's.....kind of soul-crushing, I mean, they deserve better than to work for someone like Tommy. Also, wasn't Tommy a race car driver last time we saw him?

Carter then shows up in Turtle Cove to retrieve Cole for a secret mission. Carter takes Cole to a secret NASADA base, where the space agency has only now recovered from losing all of those shuttles in the In Space season. Cole meets up with Eric and Wes, and Carter introduces them to....I'm not exactly sure who, as it's clear that Cole knows them, and Carter knows them, and Eric and Wes probably don't need to be told who they are. It's some rather poorly written exposition, although I understand why they did it. Then again, maybe Carter accurately pegged Cole as someone who needed extra assistance in keeping up with all of the Red Rangers. He also introduces T.J.....oh, fuck, everyone's going to die. Andros also shows up and explains that the leader of the Rangers for this mission will be....Tommy. Bummer. Couldn't have been Jason, eh?

Tommy explains that the remnants of the Machine Empire have come together on the Moon in order to invade Earth. Andros then shows off a new Astro Megaship to take them to the Moon. It's a volunteer mission, but, well, the other Rangers are just happy to be there. Andros asks where the hell Jason is, and a motorcycle pulls up in the distance. It's Jason, and he gives the team a look-over. The assembled Red Rangers move off to...wait, aren't we one short? Where's Leo, my second-least favorite Red Ranger? (Note: Apparently the guy who played Leo was still pissed about the....pacing issues in the teamup episide with Lost Galaxy and only showed up for a few reshoots. Not the world's biggest loss.)

On the moon, the head Machine guy shows off his new superweapon and vows revenge. On Mirinoi, Leo decides he probably should head out. On the Megaship, Tommy finally tells the team exactly what they'll be doing once they reach the moon with the help of some version of Alpha. Tommy explains that he and the other Zeo Rangers, who couldn't be here today, but send their regards, destroyed most of the Machine Empire, but that turned out to not quite be enough, as they've regrouped under General Venjix and are excavating Serpenterra. What's Serpenterra, you ask? Well, it was Lord Zedd's awesome gigantic zord that dwarfed any megazord ever built. Oh, it always ran out of power before it could do anything, but presumably this time will be different. Cole immediately leaps to the bold conclusion that the assembled strike force of Rangers should stop the evil robots from destroying the Earth. You know, watching Cole's actor going up against all of the other Red Rangers, who weren't exactly played by legends of the screen, makes me realize just how shitty the acting this season has been. On the plus side, the guy playing T.J. seems a lot better than the last time I saw him.

Anyway, the evil Beetleborgs are about to turn on Serpenterra when the Rangers manage to sneak up right behind him undetected. That's some piss-poor security, there, Venjix. It's time for the unmorphed melee. T.J. is still forgettable! Tommy still has his trademark battlecry! Jason is getting too old for this shit! Eric is still competent! Andros is still playing by a guy who doesn't do his own stunts! Carter still just shoots people in lieu of punching them! Eric should stop wearing that red beret! No one watched this episode to see Cole fight!

The generals decide to just go ahead and board Serpenterra while the Rangers are fighting the Cogs, and Cole tries to stop them. He fails, of course, but gets saved by Leo and Aurico (the Red Aquitar Ranger from the end of season 3, when they ran out of Sentai footage with the original suits but still had about ten episodes to go until Zeo). The Rangers reassemble and Leo unmorphs....and Aurico doesn't because they couldn't get the original actor.

The general pursue the Rangers and realize that they've inadvertently stumbled into the Red Ranger reunion. "It's Morphin' Time!" "It's Morphin' Time!" "Shift Into Turbo" "Let's Rocket" "Go Galactic" "Lightspeed Rescue" "Time For Time Force" "Quantum Power" "Wild Access" And Aurico is already morphed and Rocky....wasn't invited.

The Rangers work in pairs to defeat the Robot Generals, who have got to be gobsmacked by all of the Red Rangers in history showing up. Cole and Jason team up and Cole tries to be endearing by saying "Morphonomenal" his attempt fails. Wes and Tommy fight against the green robot, which ends when Tommy kicks the robot in the chest so hard that it explodes.

Meanwhile, Aurico and Eric team up in the "Do whatever the hell you have to, but we must have ten Red Rangers" fight. Leo and T.J. fight another general in a fight I will know as "the fight of the damned." Finally, that leaves Andros and Carter to eschew close combat altogether and just shoot their enemy until it dies.

Everyone's dead except for the guy Cole and Jason were fighting because Cole's final attack just wasn't good enough. Serpenterra takes off and Carter announces that there's no time to chase it in the Astro Megaship. Time for an epic megazord battle? Yeah, you wish. No, instead Cole calls on the new motorcycle that was awkwardly introduced at the end of last week's episode. He then starts driving it in space, which appears to have the same properties as an asphalt road in terms of manuevering the motorcycle, and then blows up the mightiest zord of them all by flying right into its mouth and firing some lasers. Man, you could not have scripted a more disappointing ending if you tried.

The Rangers then shoot the breeze about there old adventures and whose the best Ranger. Eric declares that the Q-Rex can kick the Dragonzord's ass. Wes claims that he changed the course of history...although it was never made clear that it was for the better. Andros claims to have saved two worlds. And T.J., in his very last T.J. moment, remembers the time he got his team cooked into a pizza. I will miss him most of all. Show Over!

Next Time: Hey, remember how when Master Org was killed, he didn't really die? Well, he's decided that to finally get back in the game by use of a ridiculously circuitous plot to defeat the Rangers.

Trakeena's Revenge, Part II

Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue, Episode 30

Original Airdate: 11-7-2000

Last Time: A little girl hung around with the Power Rangers and was made an honorary member of the team. Oh, and a few of the Galaxy Rangers showed up briefly.

In the ziggurat o' heels, Olympius uses a bat he had planted in Trakeena's lab to prove that Trakeena had no intention of working with the demons. Olympius decides to get some vengeance on Trakeena with some poison. Meanwhile, on Mirinoi, Kendrix and Damon decide that they ought to head to Earth as well.

Back in Mariner Bay, Carter asks himself what Zordon would do in this situation. He remembers the 45th precept of the late giant head, "And lo, the fanbase did grow too haughty in their demands for continuity, and so did I lay them low with the creature known only as Justin, a moppet of questionable acting skills that did drive to madness those who would complain. And I say unto you, my son, that if thou should find thyself in a plot of impossible construction, then thou too must produce a being of such odious presence that it will befuddle the senses and disrupt reason of all who look upon that child." Therefore, Carter is honorbound to send the little girl into the evil office building to pull a fire alarm. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. How does that make any sense. I mean, first of all, if nothing else, Carter could pull the alarm instead of sending in the girl, and, either way, this seems like a rather stupid-Fine, let's just go with it.

The little girl walks up to the fire alarm and pulls it after looking out the glass door and seeing Carter give her a thumbs-up. This evacuates the building and allows the Rangers a chance to infiltrate the structure disguised as firefighters. Carter and Leo head off to fight the monster again. Carter kills the monster by punching it really hard in the gut. They then break into the lab and find the shrunken people, and then fight some more cloaked guys. Wait a minute guys, are you sure you don't want to cut to the little girl? Anyway, Kendrix and Damon show up to finally do something. Trakeena emerges from the back of the lab and fights off the Rangers, knocking them out of the skyscraper they were in. But Chad, spoilsport that he is, uses an inflatable cushion to save the four Rangers.

Olympius shows up to threaten the assembled Rangers and sends in some Batlings. Well, fuck, if the Batlings couldn't handle five Rangers, they sure as hell can't deal with ten. Trakeena uses this opportunity to start morphing into a more powerful form. Olympius, meanwhile, decides to just let the Rangers and Trakeena blow each other up, and leaves, but not before poisoning Trakeena.

The poison turns Trakeena into some sort of new monster that is already giant-sized. The Lightspeed Rangers call out the Omega Megazord and the Max Solarzord. They get the crap kicked out of them. The Galaxy Rangers want to help, but the Galactabeasts are stuck on Mirinoi, so they can't. Then the Galactabeasts show up, because, well, if everyone else can make it to Earth without explanation, why not them? They bring out the Galaxy Megazord, and each megazord uses its ultimate attack on Trakeena. That doesn't work and the Galaxy Megazord gets blown apart and the Galaxy Rangers ejected. Carter grabs the prone Rangers with the Omega Megazord and this somehow gives that megazord the whole Lights of Orion power. That proves to be enough and Trakeena gets killed for good.

Later, the Rangers take the little girl back to her parents, because I know everyone needed closure on that subplot. Joel decides to focus on the task at hand and tries to hit on Kendrix and Maya. He fails. Kai gets his one line of the crossover and then the Galaxy Rangers decide to head home. Show Over!

Next Time: The little girl has to deal with a bully at school and only the Lightspeed Rangers can help. Features a ten-second cameo by Adam.

Journey's End, Part III

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 45

Original Airdate: 12-18-1999

Last Time: Let's see, okay, every villain but Trakeena died, and she went into the cocoon to give herself more power. On the Rangers' side of the ledger, Terra Venture, the Stratoforce and Centaurus Megazords, and the Megaship all got wrecked. Necessary house-cleaning, I suppose.

On the wrecked command carrier, Trakeena once more enters the cocoon to gain more power. She emerges rather quickly and is now a hideous monster. Meanwhile, Leo is stuck on the moon unmorphed. Last episode they made a big deal about evacuating Terra Venture because the moon had no atmosphere....but I guess the since a lot of the human body's need for oxygen is due to the energy-intensive work of the brain, Leo's probably fine. He starts heading to the ruins of Terra Venture. Final Credits! Bulk's in the opening credits! Despite only being in about four episodes this entire season!

On the planet below, the Terra Venture refugees are making camp. The Rangers are looking for Leo, but can't find him. The missing Red Ranger is walking on the moon, in fact, and is able to track Trakeena's path to the wreckage of Terra Venture through her mucus-filled footprints. Because she's a monster now, you see, and thus produces lots and lots of mucus.

Trakeena is able to reach the center of the city and somehow repowers the entire city with her staff. She then gets the city to lift off the moon's surface and sends it plummeting towards the human camp. Leo finally catches up to her in the command room of the city, and notices that Trakeena is now really, really slimy. Nonetheless, he has no choice but to fight her. Leo, however, is decidedly overmatched.

On the planet below, the other Rangers are still looking for him when Mike calls in and explains that they've found Leo....on the ruins of Terra Venture flying directly towards the colonists. The other Rangers decide that they really ought to stop that and fly up on their Jet Jammers.

The other Rangers show up but aren't much more effective. Commander Stanton and the others look up to the sky and see Terra Venture descending on them and are mildly concerned. Meanwhile, the Rangers have decided to use a bunch of their weapons one last time. First up, the Quasar Launchers! They do nothing. Next up, the motorcycles! They also fail. How about the Capsular Cycle? Nope, doesn't hurt Trakeena a bit.

On the planet, the colonists are fleeing and Bulk is among them. Good ol' Bulk. Okay, so what haven't the Rangers tried? Oh, yeah, the fucking Battilizer. Leo pops it out and it still looks incredibly heavy and awkward. Leo uses the grabbing arm of the armor to pull Trakeena into point blank range and then fires all of his weapons at her at once. A giant explosion consumes both warriors as Leo realizes that this may have been his most idiotic idea yet.

The other Rangers run up to the blast crater and assume Leo is dead. As if I should be so lucky. No, the fuckface is fine and gives his team a thumbs up....and then the Rangers realize that while killing Trakeena was neat, it doesn't stop the colony from plummeting onto the colonists. Fortunately, the Rangers still have one toy they haven't used during the last few episodes, and the Galaxy Megazord shows up to push the colony to a safe crash landing. The Rangers survive and everyone celebrates.

The Galactabeasts show up to reveal one last secret. The Rangers walk through a nearby jungle and realize that they've landed on Mirinoi. Er....wasn't Mirinoi completely turned to stone. I mean, there are still stone people, but everything else seems normal and that's not exactly how it happened way back when. I only bring this up because the opening sequence of every episode clearly shows the entire planet turning to stone. Listen, I'm not a continuity nerd or anything, but it seems like you should keep things consistent IN THE SAME EPISODE! Oh, fuck it, only five minutes left. Maya decides to give a little speech to wrap things up and she flashes back to the footage where everything got turned to stone. Of course.

Anyway, let's wrap this up. The Rangers realize that if they return their Quasar Sabers to the stone where they found them they can save Mirinoi, and they do so. Everyone on Mirinoi turns back to flesh and blood, even that spaced out elder from the first episode. Also, Kendrix comes back...as a zombie! And she breaks open Leo's head like melon and devours his brain! Actually she's back to normal somehow. The Galactabeasts shoot off some fireworks and.....Show Over! Season Over!

Next Time: The Least Memorable Season of Power Rangers that Ever Was!

Journey's End, Part II

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 44

Original Airdate: 12-17-1999

Last Time: Deviot and Trakeena kind of got jumbled together in the cocoon and that somehow led to suicide Sting Wingers. Also, Commander Stanton finally ran Terra Venture into the ground in the most literal way he could manage.

On Terra Venture, everyone's still evacuation. Outside the colony, Stratoforce and Centaurus are trying to prevent the suicide bugs from making it to the colony. They don't do a very good job and end up covered in suicide bombers as other Sting Wingers make it inside the city. Credits!

The bugs are suicide-bombing the shit out of Terra Venture, and Bulk and Phenomenus run for their lives. Hi, Bulk! It's been, like, twenty episodes since I'd seen you and I'd kind of forgotten you were still on this show. I think the writers forgot too.

The Rangers fight the Sting Wingers, but Leo learns the hard way that it's dangerous to fight bugs with bombs strapped to their chests as he gets blown up. This hurts him much less than you'd expect, though. The other Rangers also manage to get hurt by the explosive Sting Wingers. Vilemax watches some Sting Wingers clamber onto a building and blow it and themselves up, and is less than pleased when he sees something run past his field of vision. It's a little girl and Vilemax saves her from some falling rubble. He then helps her find her mother and gets some flowers as a reward. And Vilemax's heart grew three sizes that day!

Outside, Stratoforce and Centaurus are almost completely covered with explosive-armed Sting Wingers. This does not bode well for them. Alpha calls into inform Leo of this situation, but the Rangers realize that Terra Venture also has a suicide bomber problem and can't leave. Stratoforce and Centaurus are both completely destroyed by the suicide bombers and Vilemax looks on with disgust.

In the city, the Rangers are having difficulty dealing with the suicide Sting Wingers, but are eventually able to take them all out. Unfortunately, the dome is still crumbling and the Rangers realize that they need to get the people out of Terra Venture quickly. On the command carrier, Trakeena wants Vilemax to lead her army into the colony to capture the Rangers, and Vilemax informs her that she kind of blew up her entire supply of Sting Wingers in the suicide attacks. Trakeena decides to blow up the Rangers herself.

People are still getting on shuttles to leave Terra Venture and Bulk shows about again, which just about doubles his screentime this season. Mike finds Commander Stanton still on the bridge, musing about how he's managed to get the entire colony destroyed. The people of Terra Venture finally leave the colony on a fleet of shuttles.

Lamentably, the shuttles have no defenses, and Trakeena decides to kill everyone in the shuttles with the command carrier. She orders Vilemax to begin firing, and he looks at the flowers he got from the little girl and realizes that he really, really, really doesn't want to murder thousands of unarmed civilians. On one of the shuttles, the little girl spots the command carrier, and everyone realizes they're about to die.

Vilemax, however, has had enough and refuses to fire, and tries to convince Trakeena not to kill everybody. She starts shooting Vilemax, who refuses to fight, because he's learned something about the true nature of good and evil....which doesn't save him from being murdered by Trakeena. She points out the irony that he's the one who taught her to fight. Kegler, on the other hand, would much rather he survive than some civilians, and so stays by her side even though she just killed his friend in cold blood.

The Rangers, however, have used this time to get the ol' Megaship and is able to protect the shuttle fleet. Trakeena elects to ram the Megaship which pretty much destroys it. Suddenly, the voice of T.J. reaches across the universe to give Leo an idea: self-destruct the Megaship! This proves to be a stupid idea, as the Rangers realizes too late that the Jet Jammers can't get them off of the exploding ship. Since them all dying in a catastrophic explosion of their own making would be too depressing a season finale, they're able to rescue Alpha and get the doors open shortly before the ship goes up in flame. The force of the explosion is such that the commander carrier and Leo crash on the moon.

On the planet, the Rangers find Alpha, and the colonist land safely. Well, that's that then. Kai wonders where Leo is, but I guess it's one of those season-ending mysteries. On the moon, Leo crawls from the wreckage of his Jet Jammer, and I realize that there's no way to wrap things up in two minutes. Oh, fuck. On the ruins of the command carrier, Trakeena enters the cocoon again to get even more powerful, and, Christ, when will this season end? To Be Continued!

Next Time: The really real ending to this season, I promise.

Journey's End, Part I

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 43

Original Airdate: 12-16-1999

Last Time: The Rangers escaped the titular Lost Galaxy and you think that would end the show, but it turns out to have been a long detour who's main purpose was to save money by using as much Sentai footage as they could.

On the command carrier, Trakeena still wants to destroy Terra Venture. Deviot, having somehow survived the destruction of Captain Mutiny's castle, shows up to thank Trakeena for rescuing. Trakeena, however, has now, and only now, realized that Deviot is a traitor and orders Vilemax to kill him. Deviot is able to get off the bridge, but only after getting badly hurt. Luckily for him, he finds that cocoon that he used to really want twenty episodes ago. He starts moving towards it and... Credits!

...Vilemax shows up and starts beating up Deviot some more as Trakeena stands to the side and laughs. Deviot, realizing that he's basically doomed, decides to take a kamikaze rush at Trakeena and knocks them both into the cocoon. Trakeena emerges from the cocoon having absorbed Deviot and his robotic voice filter.

On Terra Venture, Commander Stanton is once more addressing the Terra Venture council of elders. Apparently they're still almost out of fuel, and only one engine still works. Commander Stanton's summary: "We are going nowhere....slowly." Fortunately, the commander has found a suitable planet to land Terra Venture on and thus spares himself from a court-martial.

Commander Stanton gives a colony-wide announcement. During the speech it is announcing that Terra Venture has only been traveling for about seven months. That...seems oddly low, if only because that means that the colony has been traveling for significantly less time that this season has been on the air. Anyway, he shuts off the fake lights so everyone can see where they're about to land.

Later, Mike is staring at the new planet just like he stared at Earth in the first episode. Commander Stanton and him have a talk, because they're landing the next day. Elsewhere, the other Rangers also discuss the situation. The Rangers stare at the planet for a while, and Kai realizes that his job actually requires him to help land the colony and runs off.

And, lo, the landing begins, and everything goes well right up until the point that the command carrier shows up directly overhead. Trakeena starts shooting up the colony. Fortunately, some soldiers are escorting some explosives through town, and this gives Leo the idea to steal them for his own use. Oh, that may seem a bit random, but that's how it happened.

Trakeena destroys Terra Venture's last engine, and gloats before she notices Damon hanging around in a corridor linking two of the domes. She manuevers the command carrier to intercept him, but Leo manages to plant a bomb of the outside of her ship which cripples it.

On the bridge, Kai and Mike realize that the colony isn't going to make it to the planet, and is instead heading for the planet's moon. Terra Venture hits the moon hard and its city section separate from the rest of the colony before crashing into the surface and wrecking most of the city. Even worse, the atmospheric dome starts to crack, compounding the troubles.

The council of elders confronts Commander Stanton about his latest fuck-up, and the commander explains that given the loss of atmosphere, if they don't leave Terra Venture, then everyone dies. The councillors decide that they can always court-martial Stanton on the planet below and authorize the evacuation of the colony.

On the command carrier, Trakeena eats a bug, and Kegler realizes that something's a bit off about her. In a twist that could never be allowed to appear on TV today, Trakeena has decided to arm her Sting Wingers as suicide bombers. In fairness, it's not like the Sting Wingers weren't being sent to their deaths before. Vilemax really thinks that this sort of thing goes a bit too far, and protests, but to no avail. Trakeena addresses her troops and promises them 72 bug-virgins in heaven before sending them off.

On Terra Venture, the evacuation is continuing when Commander Stanton, Kai and Mike discover a flight of Sting Wingers. Trakeena stands atop the command carrier and laughs and...To Be Continued!

Next Time: Can Terra Venture survive the Bug Fundamentalist attack?

Escape the Lost Galaxy

Power Ranger: Lost Galaxy, Episode 42

Original Airdate: 12-3-1999

Last Time: The producers continued their mad experiment by creating another episode that relied heavily on Sentai footage. On the plus side, after this episode things get better.

The episode begins with some citizens of Terra Venture being captured as slaves for Captain Mutiny. Mike tries to stop him, but can't stop him. Barbarax takes off with his new slaves and Mike laments the situation. Credits!

At the Galactic Apartment, the team is pretty sure that the should do something to help free the slaves. Kai suggests using strategy. This somehow inspires Mike to volunteer to go undercover as a slave. Mike, or rather the writers, actually take the time to come up with a good reason why Mike has to go alone: As you might recall, the Rangers all have to be together to use the Lights of Orion, so if any of them go, Terra Venture is probably even more doomed. Hooray, logic!

Soon enough, the next slave raid happens and Mike gets himself captured. The slaves get taken to Mutiny's slave camp, and are all manacled and forced to dig for treasure. You know, with that many slaves Mutiny could probably just open a factory and make new treasure instead. Mike learns firsthand that Mutiny treats his slaves like....slaves, and is outraged. He's also chained up to a girl, who, by laws of television, is now his love interest.

Anyway, with only one episode to lead the great slave rebellion, Mike begins his heroic work at double-speed, giving water to his love interest and helping meet the work quotas of the elderly. And it pays off as his new love interest saves him from being cut in half by an axe.

On Terra Venture, Kai has decided that maybe it's time they leave the Lost Galaxy, and decides to look at the MacGuffin Book for guidance. Leo wishes Kendrix were there to help, as he is excellent at bringing a room down. Kai tries a spell, but it does nothing. The Roid Guardian should have chosen a better successor. Leo figures out that if you say the spell in reverse, it should reverse the effects. Man, that's got to be about the laziest cop-out I have ever seen, but at this point, I want this arc to end too badly to care overmuch. And, in answer to some question you'll have later, they only get one shot to pull this off because the MacGuffin Book went flying off after the spell was cast.

On the bridge, everyone's delighted that the portal to the normal galaxy is open, and Commander Stanton orders that the colony be flown through. Meanwhile, Mike has decided that the rebellion starts now and hides from the slavers with his new love interest, who I don't think has a name yet. Love interest's grandfather creates a distraction to allow them to escape. Mike calls in the other Rangers with his morpher, which the slavers did not take away. I guess the lesson for today's episode is to make sure that your potential slaves do not have magical weapons that they can use against you.

Mike fights off a pirate mook and is able to free all of the slaves. You know, I'm starting to think that Captain Mutiny didn't run a very tight slave camp. The Megaship arrives and the Rangers escort the slaves onto the ship. Alas, Love Interest's grandfather was sent to a special jail cell for his earlier diversion and therefore Mike and Love Interest must save him.

The rescue doesn't take very long but they get intercepted on the way back by Barbarax. Mike must fight him so that the others can escape. On the Megaship, Love Interest decides to go look for Mike. Captain Mutiny sees the Megaship take off and tries to stop it, but Mike prevents it. Mike gets blasted by Mutiny for his trouble, and Deviot suggests that Mutiny stop Terra Venture from reaching the portal, and the captain agrees.

Back on the planet, Mike is hurt, and who should appear but the ghost of the original, much better, version of the Magna Defender. I believe his speech to Mike goes as follows, "Mike, you useless piece of shit, you know about a million ways to disappoint me, don't you? I made you Magna Defender and this is how you're treating my legacy? Holy fuck, I used to create volcanoes out of spite and you get knocked out by fucking space pirate? Now get up there and make everyone remember how kickass the Magna Defender is or I will literally march out of hell and beat you to death with your own sword! And yes, I'm in hell." That gets Mike going again.

Up on Terra Venture, Commander Stanton notices that the portal is closing, and that might be a problem. The Megaship speeds back to Terra Venture, but Mike isn't on it. That's because he's realized that if you a bad enough ass, then you can hold open a portal with a giant robot even if that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Unfortunately, Mike isn't enough of a bad ass to prevent Torozord from being blown to pieces, but he does manage to keep the portal open long enough for everyone to get through.

Captain Mutiny's castle also makes it through, and he delights at the thought of getting to be the villain for the season finale. Trakeena instantly dispels such illusions by blowing up his castle and all those onboard. Bye, Captain Mutiny!

Later, Leo is searching through space on his Jet Jammer, looking for Mike in the depths of space. He finds him floating there with nothing protecting Mike from the vacuum. Mike turns out to be fine, but the Magna Defender footage is exhausted and so his powers are gone. Fortunately, Love Interest is there to comfort him. The ghost of the Magna Defender shows up and congratulates Mike on a job....done. Show Over!

Next Time: It's the end of everything!

Raise the Titanisaur

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 41

Original Airdate: 11-19-1999

Last Time: Emboldened by recent successes in cutting costs, the producers endeavored to create an episode that was over 75% Sentai footage. They succeeded, but at what cost? At what cost?

On Terra Venture, they're still running out of fuel, and that's causing the engineering department to go up in flames for some reason. Note: Never create a ship that explodes if it runs out of fuel. The builders of Terra Venture apparently disagree with such notions of ship designing, as one of the engines blows up due to low pressure in its fuel tanks. On the bridge, Commander Stanton orders the other engines be turned down in order to prevent similar incidents, and I can't help but remind everyone that there is no friction in space, and thus no reason for engines to constantly be blasting at full power. Damon apologizes to Commander Stanton for letting the engine blow up, and I'm still not exactly sure why it did. Anyway, if Terra Venture loses one more engine, they're apparently totally screwed. Credits!

On the beach, the axe-monster, whose name is Barbarax, decides to fight the Rangers. They uses a whole lot of Sentai footage in the process. Deviot shows up to taunt them. A distant rumbling starts shaking the entire colony and Titanisaur, the monster that sometimes propel's Captain Mutiny's castle, shows up and starts wreaking havoc. Incidentally, Captain Mutiny's Castle sounds like the name of the best children's show ever. "Remember kids, if you don't share then I'll keelhaul the lot of ya! Now start singing about the letter F or else!"

The Rangers call on the Galaxy Megazord, but it's far too early in the episode to do any good. The megazords all knocked around for a bit and then are blasted into their component parts. Fortunately for the series, the Titanisaur overheats and has to retreat, but not before knocking off one of Stratoforce's arms. The Titanisaur crashes into the sea, and Captain Mutiny decides to separate the castle to allow the Titanisaur to carry less weight into battle.

Back at the Galactic Apartment, the Rangers are pondering their next move. Kai suggests focusing their firepower on the castle next time. Unfortunately for Kai, the castle is being separated from the Titanisaur as he speaks. Captain Mutiny sends out Titanisaur to fight the Rangers again.

And so, the second battle between the Titanisaur and the Galaxy Megazords begins. The Rangers realize that the castle is gone and they have no idea what to do. They try fighting with their individual zords, but that never works. Mike shows up with Torozord, but accomplishes nothing. The Rangers call on all of their zords, and momentum starts to shift their way, starting with Mike cutting off the Titanisaurs' tail. The zords all use their ultimate attacks, and Titanisaur is obliterated.

On the bridge, however, the death of Titanisaur has not solved the fuel problem, and another engine is about to explode. They're able to save the engine this time, but the underlying problem remains. Show Over!

Next Time: The end of the Lost Galaxy, by which I mean the galaxy itself, not the show.

Hexuba's Graveyard

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 40

Original Airdate: 11-18-1999

Last Time: The season was running out of money, quickly, so the writers whipped up a dream episode where they could use as much Sentai footage as possible to keep the season going.

In space, Captain Mutiny is rowing over to Hexuba's chamber. I don't know how the hell you can row in space. Hexuba has a new plan that involves raising dead monsters from the grave to kill the Rangers. Incidentally, it's nice to know that as late as 1999, it was perfectly acceptable to have a blatantly offensive Gypsy stereotype on children's programming.

On Terra Venture, Leo is going for a run when the Tiki monster from the episode where the Magna Defender kicked it shows up. Leo recalls killing this particular monster before and is confused. Credits!

The Tiki monster is reasonably sure that he can kill Leo so long as no other Rangers show up...but they do, and that's that. The Rangers reflect the Tiki monster's odd resurrection, but soon find another dead monster. It's one of the monsters Deviot hired to kill Trakeena....and, if I recall correctly, he never actually fought the Rangers. That's fortunate, because it allows for the producers to use the original Sentai footage and save more money. Elsewhere, Mike sees another monster zooming towards Terra Venture. Leo uses his Quasar Launcher as a bat to beat the monster he's currently fighting to death and the Rangers move on.

Next, the Rangers fight a monster I can't remember. He gets swiftly killed by the Transdaggers. The Rangers realize that they have to fight the monsters at the source, and Kai volunteers to find where they're coming from.

Okay, the next undead monster is that saumrai monster who took a good long while to kill. Leo finishes him off with a normal sword strike. Elsewhere, Mike is fighting...some dude. I think it's the first monster that the original Magna Defender killed. Meanwhile, Kai finally approaches the graveyard where the monsters are coming from. Mike, however, now has to fight Treacheron, and Leo kills another monster with some fire. There are now too many monsters, however, and the Rangers must split up.

At the space graveyard, Kai interrupts Hexuba's ceremony and starts fighting her. Back on the colony, Mike re-kills Treacheron, while Leo and Maya kill another monster I can't remember. Damon and Karone have to fight Hartichoke.

Kai, however, loses his fight with Hexuba and is restrained with some sort of electrical rope, but still manages to destroy Hexuba's magical ball, and with it, the entire space graveyard. On Terra Venture, the Rangers have killed all of the monsters except one, but are out of energy. Kai shows up and kills it. But then Hexuba shows up for more monster fighting. She casts a spell to give her all of the defeated monsters' powers, and that allows her to repel the Lights of Orion attack. So Leo calls his monstrosity of a Battilizer to kill Hexuba. It's kind of unclear if it actually works, because she grows to giant-size which she may or may not have done as a result of being destroyed.

It's an old-school Megazord fight as the producers use the long-form docking sequences and the music with lyrics, just like the old days. The Galaxy Megazord and torozord aren't enough, so the Rangers call in their reserves, which means more stock transformation sequences. Anyway, that's as much stock and Sentai footage as they can wring out, and the Rangers finally kill Hexuba.

Later, Commander Stanton has some important information for Kai, Mike and one of the members of the council of elders. It turns out that the fuel supply is tainted and Terra Venture is running out of power. And that's bad. They only have one or two more days left before they all die. Show Over!

Next Time: Er....they don't all die.

Dream Battle

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 39

Original Airdate: 11-17-1999

Last Time: The Rangers faced their greatest foe: the budget shortfall, and were forced to master the technique of the clip show in order to defeat it!

On Cap'n Mutiny's ship, the Captain is instructing his new monster, Hexuba to kill the damn Rangers. On Terra Venture, parts of the colony are being evacuating, and Damon helps a girl named Terry with her car. Back on the ship o' evil, Hexuba is cooking up something bad with her crystal ball, but it's probably not going to work.

Meanwhile, Damon gets some flowers from "the girls." It's good to know that even in the face of near-certain doom the florist industry survives. The flowers are poisoned and put Damon to sleep. He dreams that he's in some otherwise unusuable Sentai footage. Credits! So, the producers had completely run out of cash by this point, hadn't they?

Damon fights a bit more in his dream, and then wakes up. He discusses the situation with Kai and Leo. Kai smells the flowers and is also poisoned. He decides to take a nap. On the Megaship, Leo arrives to find Alpha fixing Damon's Jet Jammer, which had been badly damaged in Damon's dream. He realizes that this is going to be one of those things and tries to call Kai and Damon. Alas, the two are already asleep and experiencing a shared dream. They fight off some pirate mooks.

Later, in the real world, Karone and Maya find some flowers outside their apartment. They get sent to the dream world too. In the dream, they catch up to Kai and Damon and fight some more of those pirate guys. Leo bursts into the Galactic Apartment and realizes that he's the last Ranger standing. Leo, however, decides to sniff the flowers because he's a complete moron. I mean, he looked like he suspected the flowers of being the nexus of the troubles, but still smelled them regardless. He's able to radio Mike, though. Mike shows up and also smells the flowers and only then do the brothers realize the scope of their idiocy.

In the dream, the Rangers are still waging their pointless battle against the pirate mooks. On Terra Venture, Mike is able to catch up to the flower delivery man, and finds out where the flowers have been coming from. Leo falls asleep and it's up to Mike to save the day.

Mike sleepily walks through the colony looking for the florist's shop, and, well, it's not really that exciting watching a guy try not to fall asleep. Meanwhile, the Rangers are still using up some Sentai footage. Saban payed for it, and he's going to use it, damn it! Hexuba decides to send a monster into the dream to finish them off.

Mike finally reaches the storefront but finds it empty. Upon further investigation, he finds his way into Hexuba's chamber. She shoots Mike with some sort of sleeping ray. In the dream, the Rangers are losing. But then Mike grabs a mirror which reflects the sleeping ray around the room and breaks a crystal ball that Hexuba had been using. This somehow breaks the spell, which allows the Rangers to kill the monster, which Damon does by clawing his way through the monster's heart. Megazord Fight! It's kind of a bummer that the Stratoforce and Centaurus Megazords only exist to soften up the monster for the Galaxy Megazord to finish off. Hexuba vows revenge.

Later, the Rangers wake up and Damon gets some flowers from Terry, which he immediately throws away. Karone explains that Damon's allergic to flowers, and Maya manages to fuck that cover story up by embellishing that flowers give Damon nightmares. The Rangers all laugh and Terry presumably leaves the Galactic Apartment as quickly as possible. Show Over!

Next Time: We need cost containment power, now!

Until Sunset

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 38

Original Airdate: 11-16-1999

Last Time: The Rangers fought a monster for the entire episode!

On some planet, Leo and Damon are running from Deviot and the pirate-themed goons, but are captured. Deviot wants to kill them, but that axe guy from last episode informs him that Captain Mutiny wants to kill them himself, but can't get there for a few hours. So Damon and Leo are left to hang around until then as the villains decide to leave. Credits!

On the planet, Leo and Damon are discussing their predicament. Leo and Damon both realize that neither or them actually told the other Rangers where they were going, leaving little hope for rescue. This leads to them remembering past adventures when they were in difficult situations. First up, the time Leo stowed away on Terra Venture, because no law of man could be allowed to stop his quest to reach space. Then Damon remembers the time Kai stole the Megaship to rescue his friends after they had gone through that portal. Are all of these memories going to be of felonies committed by the Rangers?

Okay, then Damon remembers the time they took those Quasar Sabers...which led to Mirinoi being turned into stone, and then Leo remembers when Mike died. Yeah, that was quite a day. I'd almost forgotten how fatalistic Mike was when he dived into that pit.

Later, they talk about the Magna Defender, who I miss dearly, if only because he had an awesome and beat up Leo a few times. Anyway, they remember the high points of that story arc, including the old Magna Defender theme music that used to play every time he showed up. They then remember how he died saving Terra Venture....from a disaster that he himself had created.

Anyway, they remember Mike coming back to life, which wasn't even that exciting the first time around. Then they skip through the next ten filler episodes as fast as they can, and having seen them, I can't really fault them.

The sun is rising in the sky, and Leo and Damon are suffering from the heat. Leo remembers gutting Scorpius, only to reminded of the futility of their struggles when Trakeena took his place. Leo claims that the Psycho Rangers were even worse, and given how that ended up....yeah, probably. Anyway, that means it's time to remember poor, dead Kendrix.

They then wrap things up by remembering Karone and the Lost Galaxy. Okay, awesome, are we done here? Damon claims that he knew Captain Mutiny was evil from the start. Yeah, well, you don't get a name like Captain Mutiny by volunteering at soup kitchens.

Captain Mutiny shows up, and the two Rangers argue over who should be executed first. The other Rangers show up and rescue the pair, and Leo blows up some monster with his Battilizer for good measure. The monster gets introduced and killed in the space of thirty seconds. Anyway, the other Rangers share some light-hearted banter, and the show's budget is saved! Show Over!

Next Time: Something actually fucking happens!

Grunchor on the Loose

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 37

Original Airdate: 11-15-1999

Last Time: Commander Stanton couldn't see the harm in trusting a guy named Captain Mutiny, and managed to let loose a monster on Terra Venture. Oh, and Kendrix is still dead.

In footage from last episode, the Rangers are still too late to stop the Grunchor monster from escaping. The Rangers explain to Commader Stanton that Captain Mutiny intends to enslave the entire population of Terra Venture. Commander Stanton regrets trusting the cap'n and earthquakes start rocking the colony. Credits!

On Terra Venture, the army is evacuating sections of the colony, and the Rangers manage to catch up to the monster in a tunnel, but are unable to damage it, and Grunchor escapes into the ground. Meanwhile, Deviot has found new employment from Captain Mutiny, and offers to supply Grunchor with a strength serum to speed things up. Captain Mutiny agrees.

Later, Deviot has the strength serum all ready to go when the Rangers show up. Deviot manages to lose his ability to track Grunchor, and gets captured by the Rangers in process. Leo wants to interrogate for information, but Maya would rather just finish him off now. Deviot crumbles and explains that only fire can kill Grunchor, and then escapes.

Another guy from Mutiny's crew shows up and starts looking for Grunchor, but is intercepted by all of the Rangers except Leo. They fight until they realize that Grunchor is nearby. The fight then continues and the Rangers get pasted.

Elsewhere, Leo and Mike find Grunchor and call everyone into the Mountain Dome. The monster from before, who's armed principally with a giant axe makes some menacing comments and then lets Grunchor do his work. Mike suggests that the Rangers all combine energy, which apparently involves them joining hands so that Leo can shoot fire out of his glove. There's an explosion, and it's momentarily unclear whether the Rangers toasted Grunchor. Turns out they didn't and they get blasted by the monster. Mike and the Rangers call in the zords. Grunchor eats part of a mountain, and the Rangers realize that eating rocks gives the monster more power.

On Cap'n Mutiny's castle, he decides to join the fight himself. Back on Terra Venture, the Rangers are losing, so Leo decides to dump more of his Ranger power into the Megazord to give it a boost. The other Rangers claim that it's too dangerous because otherwise there wouldn't be enough dramatic tension. The effort fails, however, and so the Rangers call for Stratoforce and Centaurus. It still isn't enough, and Captain Mutiny's castle merges with Grunchor to make him even more powerful. The Rangers get beat up even more. Leo remembers that they still have that Condor Missile thing and gives it a go, only for Grunchor to reflect it back at the Galaxy Megazord.

Mike decides to attack and gets his megazord blown apart in the process, but is able to detach the castle from the rest of Grunchor. The Rangers all combine their power for one last shot and start shooting fire out of the Galaxy Megazord's hands which finally proves to be enough to kill Grunchor.

Back at Mutiny's slave camp, he needs more slaves to dig for treasure. That doesn't sound like a productive operation. On Terra Venture, Kai reports that they've lost track of Mutiny's planet, which is bad...I think. Show Over!

Next Time: Clip Show!

Beware the Mutiny

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 36

Original Airdate: 11-12-1999

Last Time: The Steroid Guardian tried to stop Terra Venture from being pulled into the Lost Galaxy....he didn't do a great job.

On the command carrier, the villains are still stuck in the regular ol' galaxy and have thus managed to lose the Rangers. They decide it's not worth it to enter the Lost Galaxy, and decide to take the next few episodes off. Meanwhile, Kai repeats his revelation about being in the Lost Galaxy from last time. Credits! And for once the song lyrics aren't a pack of lies!

Commander Stanton and Mike are discussing the situation, basically, they're boned, to the point of accidentally getting off of the elevator onto an alien desert by mistake. A ghostly figure appears and tells them to leave the Lost Galaxy, but doesn't offer much in the way of helpful advice. Suddenly, Commander Stanton and Mike are back on the bridge. Kai briefs the commander on how clocks are suddenly running backwards and plants are un-growing.

On a nearby planet, an evil space ship/castle/pirate ship blasts off from under an ocean. It's the new temp villains! Their leader is a monster with a miniature sailing ship for a chest named Captain Mutiny. He....does know how mutinies work, right? That'd be like having a guy named King Regicide or Lieutenant McFrag. Anyway, Captain Mutiny sends out a monster to capture Terra Venture.

Commander Stanton has once again been hauled before the council of elders, who are displeased with this latest turn of events. Mike calls in to inform him of the giant castle type thing heading towards them. Commander Stanton orders the defenses readied. Elsewhere, the space pirates are approaching, some of them by what appears to be a space rowboat. There is no Sentai Footage that Saban will not mutilate to suit his needs.

Captain Mutiny lands and calls for a parley and offers gifts...but well, everyone's a bit suspicious of the pirate. Commander Stanton and him have a little chat, and Captain Mutiny offers to help out Terra Venture with a special machine. But to get it, Terra Venture will have to follow the cap'n to his home planet. Commander Stanton decides to roll the dice and trust a guy named Captain Mutiny, because, well, why not? The Rangers, however, know a monster when they see one, and decide to investigate the good captain.

They observe the delivery of the special machine, which has a suspicious window with bars on it. The Rangers decide to stick on the planet and quickly find a slave camp. They realize that this might be a problem. They also overhear Captain Mutiny discussing that whatever's in the box he sent to Terra Venture will help enslave its inhabitants. That's enough to get the Rangers to actually do something. Unfortunately, they get spotted by a slave who draws attention to the Rangers, and forces them to fight a rocket monster and some new pirate-themed mooks.

On Terra Venture, the mystery box arrives. Meanwhile, the Rangers beat up the new mooks, same as the old mooks. Leo decides to expedite the monster fight by just running him down on his Capsular Cycle, and that takes us to the giant-sized fight. The rocket monster decides to self-destruct, but gets taken out by the Galaxy Megazord. The rocket monster is still somehow alive, though, but Deviot comes up and drains the rest of his energy, killing him.

On Terra Venture, they open the mystery box, and the Rangers arrive just in time to see a monster emerge and burrow its way undergroud. Captain Mutiny gloats a bit and....Show Over!

Next Time: I don't know, maybe the Rangers will actually do something right for a change.

Enter the Lost Galaxy

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 35

Original Airdate: 11-11-1999

Last Time: We found out that academic dishonesty is a victimless crime!

On Terra Venture, some scientist are working on the MacGuffin book. They manage to cause some sort of electrical reaction from the book by chanting some sort of incantation. For some reason, the scientists think it's a good idea to heedlessly repeat the phrase, and, before long, they've managed to knock out the power for all of Terra Venture. Commander Stanton decides that it might not be a great idea to fuck around with the MacGuffin book anymore and decides to have it locked up. Of course, had he thought of that a few episodes ago, Kendrix wouldn't be dead. Credits!

Some mechanics are servicing the blown-out transformers of Terra Venture when they notice what appears to be a shooting star. It turns out that the shooting star was actually some overly muscular dude, who disguises himself as a typical resident of Terra Venture in order to better infiltrate the colony. Although since no seems bothered by the fact that Maya still dresses like she's in the jungle, I don't know that it's strictly necessary.

Commander Stanton has been dragged before the Terra Venture council of elders, and one of the councillors suggests just blowing the damn book up. Meanwhile, the gigantic infiltrator has made his way up the bridge. Terra Venture may have the worst security in the history of mankind. He finds the book and easily dispatches the guards with some sort of energy pulse. Kai shows up to try and stop him....and apparently he succeeds as we jump cut to Senor Muscles being interrogated by the council of elders. He's not saying anything, though. They decide to throw him in prison.

Kai puts him in a cell, and the big dude explains that Kai has to help him recover the MacGuffin Book. Kai is unconvinced until Steroid McGee is able to identify him as the Blue Ranger. He explains that he is the Guardian of the Book, and was drawn by the incantation from the beginning of the episode.

At the Galactic Apartment, everyone but Kai is convinced that the Guardian is working for Trakeena. Kai, however, has faith in the chemically-enhanced Guardian. The next day, Kai serves the Guardian breakfast, but the Guardian is slowly dying because of Terra Venture's atmosphere. He explains that he can see the future and knows that Kai will help him. Kai decides to go with it and sneaks the Guardian out of the jail cell. Kai goes off to steal the MacGuffin Book for the Guardian, and the Guardian show his gratitude with some magical diamonds.

Kai's able to get the book, but is intercepted by Deviot on his way to rendezvous with the Guardian. Deviot wins, but the Guardian shows up and beats the crap out of the villain, right until Terra Venture poisoning catches up to him, at which point Deviot is able to mortally wound the Guardian and take the book. Kai is appointed the new Guardian of the book, but has no knowledge of either the clear or the cream to guide him on his path. Deviot decides not to fuck around and immediately uses the book to give himself some more power. The Rangers get pummelled.

The Rangers decide to go with the Lights of Orion, which also fails to stop Deviot. Kai remembers he has those magic crystals, which the team uses to get some new bazookas. They fire, and that means it's time for the megazord fight. The Rangers call out all of their megazords at once, and it's more than Deviot can bear.

Unfortunately, by the time that the Rangers make it back to the book, it's already too late and something bad, involving lightning and eerie sounds. Kai eventually figures out that the colony has been teleported to the Lost Galaxy...which is bad....I think. Show Over!

Next Time: Lost Galaxy! New Villains! Same Show Formula!

Turn Up the Volume

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 34

Original Airdate: 11-10-1999

Last Time: Leo got his new Battilizer and, well, let's just say that you could tell pretty easily that it was a product of America. Oh, and Kendrix was still dead.

Damon is working on some wiring when Karone runs up to show him something. She makes him go over to some sort of job listing board where the position of chief mechanic is being advertised. Er, seems like chief mechanic wouldn't be the sort of job you'd want to fill that way, but sure. Karone encourages Damon to apply, but he's reluctant. The application apparently consists on inventing something to make Terra Venture better. Apparently Terra Venture has an ocean, acres and acres of forest, its own movie studios, but no human resources department. Some nerds show up and inform Damon that some guy named Baxter already has the position "in the bag." Baxter chimes in to agree, and he turns out to be a comically nerdy-looking character who also cannot act. Karone declares that Damon will come up with a device that "will blow everyone away." Well, killing everyone else on Terra Venture would allow Damon to win by default. Credits!

On the command carrier, the newest monster's ability is to make a loud, screeching noise, and it's bothering the hell out of the villains. Trakeena sends the monster, Decibat, down to Terra Venture to annoy someone else.

On that very space colony, Damon is none-too-thrilled that Karone has put him in the position of competing against Baxter. Their conversation is interrupted by Decibat, and the traditional early-show unsuccessul monster fight is waged by the Rangers. This time, they're actually able to make Decibat retreat when Damon blows out one of the monsters' speakers.

Later, Baxter is working on his invention when he hears Karone and Damon talking about some sort of new transmitter that Baxter quickly realizes is way better. Later that night, Damon is burning the midnight oil, staying up past...11 pm to finish his invention. Karone continues to be the only other Ranger in this episode as she talks to Damon a bit about what's going on. Damon eventually falls asleep at his work desk, and this gives Baxter a chance to take photos of Damon's plans.

The next day, Damon wakes up late and is rushing to the contest when Karone accidentally knocks him over. I think being clumsy is supposed to be a character trait of Karone's, but seeing as she'd been on the show the entirety of last season and didn't seem particularly klutzy, I don't know if I buy it. Unless the only thing keeping her from constantly tripping over herself was evil. Commander Stanton is at the contest and has already judged Baxter the winner. Apparently Baxter's ability to steal plans without getting caught made a big difference. Karone tries to blow the whistle, but Damon stops her and elects to go for passive-aggressive congratulations instead. Damon apparently feels that if Baxter wants the position badly enough to cheat, then he should have it. And that's the moral of today's story, if you want something enough to cheat for it, then you deserve it!

On the command carrier, Kegler is trying to improve Decibat so he doesn't suck as hard. Back on Terra Venture, Baxter is ordering people around when Damon shows up. Seeing as Baxter appears to be about a foot shorter than Damon, he's understandably terrified. Damon explains that the plans that Baxter stole are dangerously incomplete and will probably explode or something if Baxter tries to follow them as is. Baxter refuses to admit that he stole the plans, and so continues on regardless of the danger.

Decibat attacks with his sounds and Commander Stanton orders the use of Baxter's new device that is theoretically designed to combat the monster. The Rangers also show up to fight the monster but Damon's late. That pushes back the whole Lights of Orion timetable. Baxter ties to use his device and push back the monster, but, as prophecied by Damon, the device explodes before it can finish the job. Commander Stanton demands answers, and Damon, for some unknowable reason, decides to cover for Baxter and help him repair the device. The pair are able to get the device working again, and Damon rushes off so that they can blast Decibat with the Lights of Orion. The megazord fight is cancelled due to lack of interest.

Later, Damon and Karone are wrapping things up when Baxter comes along to explain that he's resigned the Chief Mechanic position. Thus, Damon gets the job....for about five seconds before he realizes that he doesn't want to be in management. So he foists the job back onto Baxter. I have absolutely no idea what lesson the kids were supposed to learn from this episode. I mean, Baxter cheats, but it does him basically no harm in the end, and Damon actually benefits from being cheated off of by avoiding the job he doesn't want. It actually makes cheating seem like a good way to get things done, in all honesty. I guess the most definitive thing I can say is that having now had three episodes to observe Karone, I think more female Rangers should wear tight leather as their civilian outfit. Show Over!

Next Time: In a stunning show of much-delayed fidelity to the title, there is actually a lost galaxy!

Facing the Past

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 33

Original Airdate: 11-9-1999

Last Time: Kendrix was still suffering from her case of being vaporized, so the Rangers were forced to recast the role of Pink Ranger.

At the quarry, Trakeena introduces this week's monster, Magnetox. He successfully beats up a bunch of Sting Wingers as a test, and is sent out to harass the Rangers.

Back on Terra Venture, Karone is playing around with some children, and no parents seem concerned about the blonde woman who wears only tight leather and nobody actually knows hanging around their kids. Leo shows up to play with the kids to, as he is still unemployed. By the way, how do you think the Rangers explained Kendrix's death to the leaders of Terra Venture? "Hey, Commander Stantion? You know Kendrix, that blonde scientist with the glasses? Well, she had to go to....a peace conference...forever. Gotta run!" The kids are also all wearing jumpsuits, because the writers occaisionally remembers the premise of the series. The writers then decide to punish me for bringing that up by making me watch the footage of Karone getting kidnapped as a child again. On the plus side, I get to see Darkonda again. She broods about her dark past briefly. Magnetox shows up. Credits! Kendrix is still listed in the credits, and so is Karone, oddly enough.

Magnetox attacks and Leo gets his morpher wrecked. The Rangers decide to run away. Later, Alpha explains that Leo's powers have been drained. The news causes Karone to remember this warrior she fought when she was Astronema. She remembers turning him to stone right before he unleashed some sort of devastating attack that involves putting to keys together. Also, Ecliptor is in the flashback. Hi, Ecliptor! She figures that those keys might restore Leo's powers, and so they head off to try.

Meanwhile, the other Rangers and Mike fight Magnetox. They don't do well and Kai and Maya lose their powers. Elsewhere, Leo and Karone find the cave where the stone warrior should be, but Karone gets called out by some nearby skeletons for her evil past, and has to fight her old, Astronema self in order to be allowed to get the power-restoring keys. Even worse, her evil self still retains her power of overacting!

Astronema manages to hold Leo hostage and demands that Karone sacrifice herself for Leo. Karone agrees and thus passes the morality test! Back on Terra Venture, Magnetox steals Damon and Mike's powers. Damon stays behind to delay the monster and manages to get badly beaten for his efforts.

Back in the cave, Karone and Leo find the petrified warrior, but the keys are gone. Leo decides to leave while Karone apologizes to the warrior for turning him to stone. She cries on him, and magically brings the warrior back to life....somehow. Then again, last season Karone was herself brought back to life with tears, so maybe that's just how these things work in the Power Rangers universe. The warrior gives Leo the keys, which give him back his powers, and a little something extra besides.

Back on Terra Venture, Karone and Leo arrive and Leo shows off his hideous Battlilizer Armor. It looks incredibly awkward and comes with boots shaped like blocks of cement. I probably would have thought it was cool when I was twelve, though. Wait a minute, I was around twelve when this show came out and I don't ever remember thinking, "Man, it would be awesome if the Red Ranger had to lug 100 pounds of metal on his shoulders!" Anyway, Leo kills the monster with his new toy and restores the Rangers' powers. No time for a megazord fight, so the Rangers just talk about how cool the Battilizer is instead.

Later, the male Rangers are playing some football while Maya and Karone talk about their feelings. Hooray traditional gender roles! Then Karone and Maya spray the other Rangers with a nearby hose. Seems like they wouldn't want you to waste water like that on a space colony with presumably limited water supplies....but, well, the next time Terra Venture is actually treated like a space vessel will be the first. Show Over!

Next Time: Damon learns an important lesson about...let's say cheating.

Protect the Quasar Saber

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 32

Original Airdate: 11-8-1999

Last Episode: Kendrix used her science skills to teach the Rangers the meaning of the phrase "Momento Mori!"

Kendrix's Quasar Saber lands on some alien planet, and its new owner sees the opportunity for profit. Meanwhile, on Terra Venture, Maya is receiving a visit from GhostKendrix, who tells her to find her Quasar Saber, and also that Maya shall be Thane of Cawdor and Glamis. Maya is concerned that her dead best friend is talking to her, but Kendrix assures her that she's in "a wonderful place." Is it Montreal? I've heard good things about Montreal. Maya wakes up and it was all a dream.

Maya, however, summons the rest of the Rangers and makes them help her look for the Quasar Saber. On the command carrier, Trakeena dispathes Deviot to look for it, too. Vilemax also goes searching for it. Credits! Kendrix is still in the opening title sequence...but not for much longer.

On the alien planet, the Rangers arrive, and distract some aliens with Kai's bird calls. The guy who found the Quasar Saber explains that he already sold it and demands something for information on his whereabouts. The Rangers are in no mood for such games and threaten him with bodily harm. The alien directs them to some other alien planet whose name I refuse to write down. And it doesn't matter anyway, because the alien was Deviot in disguise and he just gave the Rangers the run around. Deviot then interrogates the real alien and learns that the Quasar Saber is on Onyx...you know, that planet with the evil saloon.

On Onyx, an evil auction is taking place. The auctioneer brings out the Pink Quasar Saber and puts it out for bids. Some Piranhatrons are also there, and it's nice to see them finding steady work. The bidding is fierce until Astronema shows up and wins the auction by threatening to kill everyone else in the room. She's about to get away with it when Trakeena shows up and proves to be the only won who remembers that Astronema, or rather Karone, isn't evil anymore. Karone still manages to escape the saloon, though. Fortunately, Deviot has managed to lead the Rangers into a trap on another planet.

On said planet, the trap works perfectly, and the Rangers manage to run right into a bomb. Deviot shows up to taunt them, but is interrupted by Karone, who is still dressed in tight leather. I approve. The Rangers all recognize Karone....somehow, and Karone explains that she's still trying to find redemption or whatever. Trakeena teleports in to block their escape. Karone picks up the Pink Quasar Saber and starts unsuccessfully fighting Trakeena, which ends with Trakeena knocking her off of a cliff. Karone manages to hang onto some rocks, but has lost the Quasar Saber. Also, the other Rangers are still losing.

Karone falls off of the rocks, but is saved by GhostKendrix, who tells her to become the Pink Ranger and stop sucking. Karone now has a morpher and steals the Quasar Saber back from Trakeena. She morphs and they all fight until Vilemax realizes that they can totally use this time to destroy Terra Venture. Unfortunately, the monster they leave behind as a stall tactic proves not to be up to the task and folds after one hit from the Lights of Orion.

There's also a giant monster fight on Terra Venture. The Rangers decide to let Kendrix summon the zords and she comes up with, "Galactabeasts, over here!" while waving her arms. I think the Rangers have to review their hiring policies. She eventually gets it right, and the monster, which appeared to be half-tank, gets killed.

Later, Karone inherits Kendrix's half of the Galactic Apartment and she and Maya talk about Kendrix. Then everyone has a celebratory dinner, because it's been a whole episode, and so the mourning period for Kendrix is completed. Show Over!

The Power of Pink

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 31

Original Airdate: 11-5-1999

Last Time: The Psychos showed up again, and it took two teams of Rangers teaming up to kill them....except Psycho Pink survived.

On Terra Venture, the Galaxy Rangers take the Space Rangers to meet the Galactabeasts. Cassie manages to climb up on the pink one, only to fall off. Incidentally, we'll be seeing a lot of Cassie this episode, as she was supposed to take over for Kendrix, but due to a contract dispute, it didn't happen, which makes this episode kind of awkward in places.

On the command carrier, Deviot is repairing Psycho Pink, and Trakeena wants her to destroy all ten Rangers. As is traditional for the Psychos, Psycho Pink immediately mutinies and escapes. Credits!

At the lab, Kendrix is studying the MacGuffin Book and sees a page featuring a giant sword. She finds out that the sword is called "The Savage Sword," presumably of Conan. Elsewhere, Psycho Pink is limping through town and uses a computer kiosk to find Kendrix, who has found the location of the Savage Sword. Psycho Pink bursts through the computer screen and steals the information from Kendrix's mind before departing.

Cassie and Kendrix meet up and start hunting down the last Psycho. They're able to catch up to her, but Psycho Pink gets away. Kendrix explains that the Savage Sword is super-powerful and if Psycho Pink finds it, the Rangers are boned. They head off to find the sword.

Back on Terra Venture, the other eight Rangers are having lunch when they're interrupted by Kendrix's warning and a flight of Sting Wingers. On some other planet, Psycho Pink manages to grab the Savage Sword, and Cassie and Kendrix start panicking. She starts beating them up and reveals that the magic sword gets more powerful everytime you hit someone with it. Meanwhile, the other Rangers are still fighting the Sting Wingers, which is notable only in that it's your last chance to see the Space Rangers fight some enemy mooks.

Back on the the planet, Psycho Pink forcibly demorphs Cassie, and breaks her morpher for good measure. This unleashes some sort of maelstrom of energy that forces Psycho Pink to drop the sword, but turns her into her monster form. The other Rangers finish off the Sting Wingers when the energy wave hits Terra Venture and starts doing damage to the colony.

Psycho Pink grows to giant-size, and Kendrix stares her down alone, as Cassie is too injured to do much of anything. The Galaxy Megazord shows up and starts fighting the monster, but isn't powerful enough. The Space Rangers decide to bring the Astro Megazord out of mothballs to help.

Meanwhile, the energy storm is still out of control, and it becomes clear that it's having some sort of effect on Cassie because of her morpher. Kendrix decides that she has to help and starts heading for the Savage Sword, but is repelled by the energy. She tries again and starts making it through the energy field, but gets badly hurt in the process.

The two megazords, however, are able to finish off Psycho Pink and now the Psycho Rangers are finally and forever defeated. And the day is sav-oh, wait, the energy thing hasn't been resolved yet. Kendrix is still making her way to sword and, by this point, everyone is telling her to stop before she gets killed. She...uh...doesn't. Kendrix manages to break the Savage Sword with her Quasar Saber, but gets vaporized in the process.

Kendrix's ghost appears and claims that she's okay. That's putting a hell of a positive spin on the situation. She disappears and her Quasar Saber flies off. On the plus side, Cassie's morpher is repaired.

Later, the Space Rangers depart, because the vacation is definitely over. The Space Rangers say farewell to their color counterparts, except for Cassie, because, well, you know. They finally fly away, and the Galaxy Rangers realize that they're still a member down. Show Over!

Next Time: The team gets a new Pink Ranger forced down their throats!

To the Tenth Power

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 30

Original Airdate: 11-4-1999

Last Time: The Rangers killed some time!

On some desert planet, Deviot retrieves some ominously familiar-looking key cards from a Jawa. The Jawa immediately turns of Deviot and tries to kill him, but we'll never know why as Deviot annihilates him instantly.

On the command carrier, Deviot explains that he's about to kick the shit out of the Rangers with what's on the keycard. Kegler starts asking something and Deviot responds with, "You need to stop asking questions before I have you destroyed." I love Deviot. He turns on a machine and brings the Psycho Rangers back to life. Credits!

Back on the desert planet, Andros shows up with his cloak and realizes that he's too late to stop the Psycho Rangers from coming back. So, going back to last season, this puts his failure streak at what, eight?

On the command carrier, the Psychos are being predicatably mutinous. Fortunately, the villains thought ahead and have planted some sort of restraining device on the Psychos, and they're shocked into compliance.

Elsewhere, Damon is carrying the groceries while Maya walks alongside him and eats an apple. The Psychos show up and capture them. Meanwhile, Psycho Blue and Pink also capture their counterparts.

Leo, the last remaining Ranger, is spazzing out in the forest when he spots a crying child, but it's really Psycho Red, who puts the hurt on Leo. Leo morphs, but it does him no good. Psycho Red introduces himself to Leo by spinning his head Exorcist style. Just as Leo's about to get his sorry ass killed, Andros shows up and blasts Psycho Red, and then escapes with Leo.

Andros takes Leo away from the battle and takes off his cloak. Leo recognizes as the old Red Ranger, and claims that he was there the day that the Space Rangers saved Earth. Um....everyone on Earth was there when the planet was saved. Leo asks who is Psycho Red, and Andros explains that, "He's everything you are, except the opposite, and twice as powerful." It's kind of impressive that he was able to come up with three statements that all contradict each other.

They head to the Megaship and Andros reconnects with Alpha. Mike's there too. The alarms go off and Leo wants to rush off to save his friends, but Andros suggests not being a moron. Instead, he goes to the "Power Vault," where the old space morphers lie in wait. Andros takes his and comes up with a plan.

At some factory, Trakeena is taunting the captured Rangers. Leo and Andros show up, and everyone's mildly shocked to see Andros. Trakeena is delighted at the prospect of killing two Red Rangers, and sends in the Psychos.

Meanwhile, the other Space Rangers have shown up at the Megaship and take back their morphers as well. Didn't Commander Stanton make a big deal about not being able to get back to Earth? How did they get to Terra Venture anyway? I'm going to make up my own continuity and claim that the called for a space taxi, but the driver was a militant Ukranian who was peeved at their 10% tip.

Back at the factory, Mike frees the other Rangers. They show up and tilt the numbers in the Rangers' favor. The other Space Rangers show up and make the odds even more stacked in the Rangers favor. Also, Carlos has cut his hair. I only mention that because when they morph, the old footage still has him with long hair. Then again, I don't know exactly what the producers were supposed to do about that. The assembled Rangers pose and colored plumes of smoke go off behind them.

Anyway, the Rangers fight the Psychos in pairs determined by Ranger color. The fights goes on for a while, and eventually both teams of Rangers use their ultimate attacks, and the Psychos just can't take the abuse and are destroyed. Later, on the Megaship, the teams of Rangers celebrate, evade questions about how exactly the Space Rangers got to Terra Venture, and the Space Rangers decide to take a vacation on Terra Venture.

At the fight scene, Psycho Pink has managed to survive, and Deviot comes along to salvage her.

Next Time: Okay, everyone who survives the next episode take a step forward....not so fast, Kendrix.

The Chemeliac Warrior

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 29

Original Airdate: 11-3-1999

Last Time: Leo decided to pick up an Asian chick, and, in all honesty, he's just the kind of dude you'd expect to have an Asian fetish.

In the trackless wilds of the ridiculously expansive Terra Venture, Mike is going for a run. It's been a while since I've seen Mike, to be honest. He quickly comes upon Vilemax and Kegler who are moving in a bunch of equipment as part of their latest plan to destroy "that kaleidoscopic corps." Vilemax is now officially awesome. Kegler, the monster who is half-man, half-keg, drops a data disc as he runs off to help. Kegler is not officially awesome. A monster, with a fancy checkered color scheme, shows up and threaten Mike. Mike morphs and tries to defeat Senor Checkers, whose real name is Chemeliac, but the monster shows off his special ability to copy anyone's weapon, and blows Mike up with the Magna Defender gun. The other Rangers show up to help, but well, the episode needs to be more than two minutes long, so Chemeliac flees. Credits!

Later in the infirmary, Mike is describing Chemeliac's powers. Alpha tries to take a look at the disc that Mike recovered, but it's too badly damaged to get anything out off. The Rangers decide that they have to know what Vilemax's plan is. On the command carrier, Trakeena is happy with Chemeliac's process. Chemeliac uses Trakeena's archives to learn all of the Rangers' moves. See, kids, archiving TV shows can totally help you out in the long-term. Hell, one videotape from 1992 is the only proof I have that Super Dave Osborne once had an animated series that featured the most offensive Asian character made after 1973. The late 80s and early 90s were not a great time for cartoons to be honest.

Anyway, the monster takes a good long time to analyze the Rangers and then he's good to go. And to elaborate on my point from earlier, when I say early 90s, I mean up to 1992, because things got better after that.

Elsewhere, Kegler is supervising the construction of the new secret weapon designed to take down the Rangers. Kegler claims, "I just love it when a plan comes together." An A-Team joke? On a kid's show in 1999? Seriously? See, Kegler, this is why nobody likes you. Anyway, the device appears to be some sort of giant ray. Unfortunately, the Rangers are already on their way, so Chemeliac has to fight them until Vilemax's death ray is ready.

Chemeliac is able to trounce the Rangers with his knowledge of the Rangers' tactics. The Rangers decide to up the ante by calling on the Lights of Orion, but Chemeliac is able to call on a facsimile version of the lights and forces the Rangers to retreat. Kai suggest the unorthodox strategy of thinking this one through before attacking, and this gives Leo an idea.

In the infirmary, Mike is able to piece together enough information to see that the villains are building a giant laser, but can't figure out why they'd make such a thing. Well, Mike, I'm sure it's for peaceful purposes only. The Rangers, meanwhile have headed out to the site where they're building the laser, and have to fight Chemeliac again. This time they switch up their moves and are able to defeat him. Leo decides to run down Chemeliac on his Capsular Cycle in a sequence that just kind of seems unfair.

Of course, that's only half the battle, and now the Rangers must defeat him at giant mode. Meanwhile, Mike realizes that the whole point of the giant laser was to blow up the megazord when it came out, and the Rangers are now sitting ducks. So Mike shows up and blows up the laser, much to Vilemax's dismay.

Back to the megazord fight, the Rangers realize that Chemeliac can still copy weapons, so they call on the Stratoforce, which arrives to the tune of some pretty rockin' incidental music. Stratoforce pulls out Centaurus' gun, and that pretty much ends Chemeliac.

Later, Mike and Leo are doing some more jogging. I guess there's not really much to wrap up this episode, come to think of it. Leo's Galactabeasts shows up to say thanks to Mike....and that'll pretty much do it for the episode. Show Over!

Next Time: Crisis on Infinite Terra Ventures!

A Red Romance

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 28

Original Airdate: 11-2-1999

Last Time: Loyax learned an important lesson about redemption....five seconds before Deviot blew him to pieces.

On Terra Venture, some girl crashes her bike and Leo leaps out of nowhere to save her from falling three feet to the ground. Leo is immediately set upon by the girl's brother, one Colby, who throws Leo into a picnic table. I heartily approve of Colby's "hurt Leo" initiative. The girl, named Ginger, stops Colby by explaining that Leo saved her from minor abrasions, and Colby apologizes.

On the command carrier, Deviot is introducing Moronda, supposedly quite a strong monster, despite her unfortunate name. Her special power is the ability to trap people on mirrors, which isn't really that special seeing as two episodes ago there was the monster who could turn people into trophies. Trakeena approves. Credits!

At Colby's garage, Colby fixes his sister's bike, and lends Leo his dirtbike. Leo takes it for a spin and we see a montage of him riding around. Ginger, for whatever reason, is oddly giddy at the display. Leo asks Ginger for a date, and she's non-commital, and Leo leaves. Colby reluctantly agrees to drive her to the park so she can meet Leo.

The next day, Ginger and Leo are walking in the park. Ginger complains that Colby is overprotective of her, but seeing as she's walking around in a halter top and a miniskirt, he might not be protective enough. Leo shows off his skills by doing some backflips, but then slips on a tennis ball, which I assume cancels the former out.

And just like that, a romance montage attacks! Complete with some awful, awful late-90s pop music! They fly kites! It occurs to me that the producers might have fucked this up, because I think it's supposed to be the same date, but they're both wearing different clothes. The date ends, and Ginger walks off...and immediately gets spotted by Moronda. Leo tries to save her, but fails, and Ginger is captured.

Later, Leo goes back to Colby's garage, and tries to think of the most diplomatic way to say, "I let your sister be captured by an evil monster with sinister intent." Unsurprisingly, Colby is not pleased and runs off to try to save his sister. He runs to the scene of the monster attack and finds Ginger's shoe, which had fallen off during the fight. Well, it looks like it's open-toed, so maybe it's more of sandal? I don't know.

Colby accuses Leo of cowardice for leaving his sister behind, and that makes Leo try to hug him. Colby rebuffs the oddly-timed gesture, and decides to save his sister himself. Leo realizes that he probably shouldn't let that happen, and stops Colby before he can get himself killed. Colby explains that his parents wanted Ginger "to be somebody," and sent her and Colby on Terra Venture to make that happen. Apparently Colby has let down his parents by letting Ginger get captured by a monster. Leo is either dumbfounded or just dumb, and lets Colby race off on his dirtbike to go fight the monster.

Colby drives to a construction site and starts yelling for the monster to show up. I don't think it works like that. Elsewhere, Leo is still brooding about Colby's hurtful comments. He eventually decides that letting Colby get killed is really only a short-term fix to his problems, and decides to save him.

That's good news, because Colby gets smacked around by Moronda. Unfortunately, Leo has gone looking for Colby at the man's garage and Alpha has to call Leo in order to set him straight. Leo eventually shows up to save Colby, but Colby shoves him into some cardboard boxes instead. Eventually Leo is able to earn Colby's trust by taking an energy blast meant for Colby. He gets Colby to stay behind and pursues the fleeing Moronda.

From there, it's basically not much to write about, the other Rangers show up, some Sting Wingers are called in, and Moronda calls forth a snake-themed motorcycle. The Lights of Orion attack, fails, however, and Colby has to save them with his dirtbike. Leo realizes that he has to fight motorcycle with motorcycle, and kills Moronda with his Capsular Cycle, and releases Ginger, as well as some other people who didn't have brothers that beat up Leo.

Moronda predictably gets huge, and the Rangers call on the Galaxy Megazord. Moronda gasses the Rangers and they all start hallucinating some trippy shit. The Rangers call on the Centaurus Megazord, and it performs it's traditional role of softening up the enemy for the final strike. Moronda gets stone/slashed, and that's the end of that.

Later, Colby reconciles with Leo, and allows him to go out with his sister. In fairness, Ginger is pretty hot. Show Over!

Next Time: One last filler episode before things get...interesting.
