The Lights of Orion

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 6

Original Airdate: 3-13-1999

Last Time: A stowaway was trapped on Terra Venture, so far from home, until the Rangers realized that they actually had the capability to take him back to Earth. And they did.

Furio is having a leisurely stroll through one of Terra Venture's domes when Trakeena shows up. Apparently Scorpius has seen enough, and has decided to replace Furio. The monster asks for more time so he can find the Lights of Orion. Trakeena decides to help him find the fabled Lights of Orion. And where, you might ask, are these magical energies? Why there on an artificially constructed cave on a newly built space colony, of course! You might ask, how did they get there? The answer: Shut up! Unfortunately, some sort of magical barricade impede's Furio's progress. Furio figures that the Rangers could bust it open, and begins devising a plan to have them do just that. Credits!

Maya and Kendrix have been drawn to the villains and have to fight some Sting Wingers. They get captured, and Furio and Trakeena show up. Furio immediately gets blasted by Kai, Damon and Leo, who now have motorcycles. Furio decides to up the ante by dressing as a magician and gesturing to a large box theatrically. Okay, either the writers have lost their minds or I have. He's even got a top hat. Furio motions for Trakeena to open the box and inside is....poor, dead Mike, who I guess isn't that dead. The villains leave by pick-up truck. Wait, why are they using a pick-up truck, they can teleport, I know because they teleported INTO THIS SCENE! They take the box with them. Leo gives chase on his motorcycle, and finds the box ominously unguarded, but Mike is already gone.

Leo catches up to the villains who have tied the comatose Mike to a tree. The other Rangers catch up, and Maya has a plan to make Damon be the decoy. Damon responds by being the worst decoy in history, "Boy, it sure is dangerous being out here alone. I hope no one attacks me." He leads them into an ambush set by everyone except Leo. They all morph. Leo frees Mike, who finally wakes up, and the pair escape.

Leo, showing a rare, for him, amount of insight, questions exactly how Mike escaped falling into a bottomless chasm that then closed itself, and Mike explains that there's no time. He goes onto the explain the Leo has to get the Lights of Orion, which have been sealed in the cave for "eons." But Terra Venture is, at most, a few years old. What, did the builders of the colony find a particularly mysterious cave one day and say to themselves, "You know what, I think our new space colony needs a cavern that houses an ageless wonder of cosmic proportions." Leo doesn't question how exactly Mike acquired this knowledge.

The Rangers are fighting more Sting Wingers, and have been outsmarted by Furio and Trakeena, who go off to get the Lights of Orion. Mike and Leo reach the cave, and Leo breaks the seal on the mouth of the cave. He finds the Lights, which are in a box inside a larger jail-like cage. Leo breaks the locks on both barriers and finds....another box. He takes the little box and is struck from behind by Mike who takes the box. Outside, the Rangers are still fighting the Sting Wingers when Mike announces that "The Lights of Orion are ours at last," but does it with a profoundly silly inflection. Maya can't believe that the guy she met one day for five minutes could turn out to be evil. Kendrix decides to confront Mike, who reveals that he isn't Mike at all, but just a monster of the week.

Leo shows up and everyone scrambles for the box with the Lights of Orion in them. Maya ends up with it. The monster badmouths Mike, so Leo tries to kill him but isn't strong enough. The monster and Furio blast the Rangers, and Maya loses the box. Furio grabs it and runs. The Rangers kill the monster, who drinks the giant potion, and Leo goes after Furio. We learn that Leo is entirely superfluous as the other Rangers form the Galaxy Megazord without him. Leo confronts Furio and the two begin fighting.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Megazord fends off the monster by using its sword like a bat and knocking the monster's attack back at it. The Rangers finish it off with the Condor Galactazord. Apparently the green Galactabeast is a condor, despite looking more like a dragon. A condor? The producers should probably pick something a bit harder to drive to extinction.

Leo and Furio are still fighting, and Leo says that his brother taught him to never give up. Oh, was that before or after he gave up on hanging to the cliff face and fell to his death? The two knock each other out, and the box falls the ground. Furio gets to the box first and opens it to discover that there's nothing inside. Trakeena shows up and is her usual pissy self, and the villains retreat.

On the command carrier, Scorpius tortures Furio a bit for his failures, and Trakeena convinces her father to give Furio another chance. On Terra Venture, Kai is making some cookies, but Damon wants to eat the dough raw. They muse about the Lights of Orion. Leo broods about his brother. Meh, Andros was better at it. Kendrix goes up to Leo and they discuss dead Mike. Leo, unlike his predecessor, is too much of an asshole to stay depressed for long, and decides to have some cookies. The Rangers bond over cookie dough and Maya's naivete over Earth customs. Show Over!

Next Time: Kendrix v. Kendrix!
