Power Rangers: Lightspeed Rescue, Episode 20
Original Airdate: 9-9-2000
Last Time: Ryan left, and you know what, that's good enough for me.
Joel is hanging out with some young relation and looking through a telescope. Apparently the kid wants to join Lightspeed. That's a poor career choice, right there.
At the ziggurat o' peevishness, Olympius has decided to drop an asteroid on Mariner Bay. I'm not sure how he managed to pull it off. Only President Morgan Freeman can save the city now! Anyway, Joel's....cousin or little brother or whatever sees the asteroid coming. Credits!
Ms. Fairweather explains that she's modified the Rangers' gear so that they don't need Ryan to use the Max Solarzord as well as granting them access to the Omega Megazord. Wait, hold on a minute! The "Omega Megazord?" Ugh. Anyway, the new zords are spaceships of some design. That's....conveninet. Joel tries to hit on Ms. Fairweather again with flowers, but is interrupted by his kin from before, leading to the other Rangers laughing at him once they see the flowers. Captain Mitchell shows up and is less-than-thrilled to find Joel taking a personal call through his communicator.
Joel goes to the kid's house in the Lightspeed Hummer and the kid reveals that asteroid problem. Joel realizes that such a thing might be a problem and takes the kid down to the aquabase. Long story short, the kid is able to prove that, yes, there is a meteor headed for Mariner Bay. Ms. Fairweather is concerned, because in addition to not holding a doctorate in any other discipline, she doesn't hold any advanced degree in astronomy.
The Rangers head out in the Lightspeed Solarzord, which, in an episode where a new zord is being introduced, has roughly a -90% of working. Olympius decides to block out the sun which apparently instantly drains the megazord's power. The Rangers see Olympius and decide to leave the zord and fight him. They manage to fight him off, but it turns out that it was all for naught as Ms. Fairweather explains that their current zord wouldn't have worked anyway.
It's time for the Omega Megazord, and the Rangers blast off into space via the Supertrain carrying the Omega zords. They reach the asteroid and turn the Omega zords into some sort of "crawler mode." Now, in a post-Armageddon/Deep Impact world, the Rangers are forced to drill into the asteroid to plant bombs instead of doing something exciting. Okay, now here's where it gets a bit hard to follow. The Ranger successfully plant the bombs, but Bansheera's able to trap them by taking control of the asteroid, Carter decides that they'll have to detonate the bombs manually as a result. The Rangers then shift into the Omega Megazord, which frees them, but, for some unknowable reason, they still have to detonate the bombs by hand. This leads them to stabbing one of the bombs with the Omega Megazord's weapon, which blows up the asteroid with them still on it. And they all die in a hellish explosion...in my imagination. The Rangers are fine, naturally.
Later, Joel realizes that his nephew or cousin or whatever could be his secret weapon in the war for Ms. Fairweather's heart. It fails, as all of Joel's plans are wont to do, and the other Rangers come in from off-screen for the sole purpose of laughing at him. You know, I think that the Lightspeed aquabase might be hostile work environment. Show Over!
Next Time: Another twenty episodes of this season!
