Escape the Lost Galaxy

Power Ranger: Lost Galaxy, Episode 42

Original Airdate: 12-3-1999

Last Time: The producers continued their mad experiment by creating another episode that relied heavily on Sentai footage. On the plus side, after this episode things get better.

The episode begins with some citizens of Terra Venture being captured as slaves for Captain Mutiny. Mike tries to stop him, but can't stop him. Barbarax takes off with his new slaves and Mike laments the situation. Credits!

At the Galactic Apartment, the team is pretty sure that the should do something to help free the slaves. Kai suggests using strategy. This somehow inspires Mike to volunteer to go undercover as a slave. Mike, or rather the writers, actually take the time to come up with a good reason why Mike has to go alone: As you might recall, the Rangers all have to be together to use the Lights of Orion, so if any of them go, Terra Venture is probably even more doomed. Hooray, logic!

Soon enough, the next slave raid happens and Mike gets himself captured. The slaves get taken to Mutiny's slave camp, and are all manacled and forced to dig for treasure. You know, with that many slaves Mutiny could probably just open a factory and make new treasure instead. Mike learns firsthand that Mutiny treats his slaves like....slaves, and is outraged. He's also chained up to a girl, who, by laws of television, is now his love interest.

Anyway, with only one episode to lead the great slave rebellion, Mike begins his heroic work at double-speed, giving water to his love interest and helping meet the work quotas of the elderly. And it pays off as his new love interest saves him from being cut in half by an axe.

On Terra Venture, Kai has decided that maybe it's time they leave the Lost Galaxy, and decides to look at the MacGuffin Book for guidance. Leo wishes Kendrix were there to help, as he is excellent at bringing a room down. Kai tries a spell, but it does nothing. The Roid Guardian should have chosen a better successor. Leo figures out that if you say the spell in reverse, it should reverse the effects. Man, that's got to be about the laziest cop-out I have ever seen, but at this point, I want this arc to end too badly to care overmuch. And, in answer to some question you'll have later, they only get one shot to pull this off because the MacGuffin Book went flying off after the spell was cast.

On the bridge, everyone's delighted that the portal to the normal galaxy is open, and Commander Stanton orders that the colony be flown through. Meanwhile, Mike has decided that the rebellion starts now and hides from the slavers with his new love interest, who I don't think has a name yet. Love interest's grandfather creates a distraction to allow them to escape. Mike calls in the other Rangers with his morpher, which the slavers did not take away. I guess the lesson for today's episode is to make sure that your potential slaves do not have magical weapons that they can use against you.

Mike fights off a pirate mook and is able to free all of the slaves. You know, I'm starting to think that Captain Mutiny didn't run a very tight slave camp. The Megaship arrives and the Rangers escort the slaves onto the ship. Alas, Love Interest's grandfather was sent to a special jail cell for his earlier diversion and therefore Mike and Love Interest must save him.

The rescue doesn't take very long but they get intercepted on the way back by Barbarax. Mike must fight him so that the others can escape. On the Megaship, Love Interest decides to go look for Mike. Captain Mutiny sees the Megaship take off and tries to stop it, but Mike prevents it. Mike gets blasted by Mutiny for his trouble, and Deviot suggests that Mutiny stop Terra Venture from reaching the portal, and the captain agrees.

Back on the planet, Mike is hurt, and who should appear but the ghost of the original, much better, version of the Magna Defender. I believe his speech to Mike goes as follows, "Mike, you useless piece of shit, you know about a million ways to disappoint me, don't you? I made you Magna Defender and this is how you're treating my legacy? Holy fuck, I used to create volcanoes out of spite and you get knocked out by fucking space pirate? Now get up there and make everyone remember how kickass the Magna Defender is or I will literally march out of hell and beat you to death with your own sword! And yes, I'm in hell." That gets Mike going again.

Up on Terra Venture, Commander Stanton notices that the portal is closing, and that might be a problem. The Megaship speeds back to Terra Venture, but Mike isn't on it. That's because he's realized that if you a bad enough ass, then you can hold open a portal with a giant robot even if that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Unfortunately, Mike isn't enough of a bad ass to prevent Torozord from being blown to pieces, but he does manage to keep the portal open long enough for everyone to get through.

Captain Mutiny's castle also makes it through, and he delights at the thought of getting to be the villain for the season finale. Trakeena instantly dispels such illusions by blowing up his castle and all those onboard. Bye, Captain Mutiny!

Later, Leo is searching through space on his Jet Jammer, looking for Mike in the depths of space. He finds him floating there with nothing protecting Mike from the vacuum. Mike turns out to be fine, but the Magna Defender footage is exhausted and so his powers are gone. Fortunately, Love Interest is there to comfort him. The ghost of the Magna Defender shows up and congratulates Mike on a job....done. Show Over!

Next Time: It's the end of everything!
