Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 11
Original Airdate: 4-24-1999
Last Time: Magna Defender thought about his tragic past, and killed a bunch of stuff, but not Leo, unfortunately.
At Terra Venture's stables- Wait, Terra Venture has stables? - Maya is spending time with the animals, because of all that in tune with nature bullshit that the writers have decided to dump on her character. Damon and Leo show up and beg off some sort of horse-related chore. Maya accuses them of being afraid, and they are obligated, as men, to show their courage. Leo manages to get Damon to promise to cook him dinner for week in exchange for taking on the horse problem. Leo doesn't know how to ride a horse, and the steed immediately goes berserk. Credits!
Leo gets dumped to the ground, and Damon makes fun of him. Leo realizes that he's lost his brother's dog tags, and I'm kind of unclear on how he got them in the first place. If I recall the scene where Mike died correctly, I don't think Mike really had a chance to give them to Leo. He retrieves them, and the dog tags become Chekov's momento for the episode.
That night, a monster manages to put the entire colony into some sort of cryogenic suspension by....er....let's just go with it. The Rangers show up and realize that everyone's frozen. They confront the monster, and within a minute or so, everyone but Leo is frozen too. Even Alpha gets frozen. So, why isn't Leo frozen as well? Okay, remember Mike's dog tags, well, they apparently blocked the cold blast, and so Leo isn't affected, even though it clearly looks as though the entire colony is frozen over, and presumably Leo would still be done in by that. Leo tries both his Jet Jammer and motorcycle, but neither will start.
On the command carrier, Scorpius orders Treacheron to move in and retrieve the Lights of Orion. Trakeena convinces Treacheron to bring her along for the hunt. The next day, Leo wanders through the hibernating city and finds out that animals aren't affected for whatever reason. He manages to catch up to the villain and fight off some Sting Wingers, and Treacheron realizes what a stupid idea it was to bring Trakeena when Leo almost kills her. Treacheron teleports her back to the ship, and has an inconclusive fight with Leo that he eventually decides to bail on.
Leo catches sight of a shadowy figure in the distance, and it turns out that the Magna Defender was also not frozen. The Magna Defender then effortlessly captures the Lights of Orion in a box making the last six episodes seem incredibly pointless. Leo asks for the lights so he can unfreeze the colony, but the Magna Defender isn't going to go along with that. Leo insists, and the Magna Defender responds by hitting him in the duodenum with the hilt of his sword. I love the Magna Defender. Leo decides to fight the Magna Defender for control of the lights, and the Magna Defender goes for the kill shot, but Leo dodges. Damn it.
The two fight it out and the Magna Defender unsurprisingly has the upper hand, but accidentally releases the Lights of Orion and goes chasing after them. Leo realizes that he, once again, has utterly failed, and is despondent until he sees a rabbit run by and realizes that animals are immune from the freezing effect. This leads Leo back to the stables, and, despite not knowing how to ride a horse, is able to mount a bridle and saddle on one. He gets on and instantly knows what he's doing, as shown by him leaping on fence with the horse. He probably could have just opened the gate, you know. Anyway, Leo's sudden equestrian skill prove fortuitous, as the monster of this week's episode is also riding a horse, I don't know where he got the horse, or why he's riding it, but here we are. Leo has morphed, and somehow given the horse he's riding a color-coded head piece, and charges the monster. They fight on horseback for a while, and then dismount. The conflict ends with one of those samurai movie staples where they both run at each other, and it takes a few seconds for the monster to realize that he's been slain.
The Magna Defender turns up to explain that the Lights of Orion were fake, and it was all part of a larger plan that Leo ruined. Leo's just not very good at anything. The monster grows to super-size, and the Magna Defender sends him to the land beyond the sea. By which I mean kills him good. Anyway, by the 1993 Amendments to the Fairness in Villiany Act, the freezing spell instantly reverse and everyone is okay.
On the command carrier, Scorpius isn't thrilled that Treacheron let his daughter accompany him into battle. Treacheron leaves and is threatened by Trakeena. Back on Terra Venture, Leo and the Magna Defender talk some more, but it doesn't amount to much, and the Magna Defender walks away to the sounds of the Magna Defender theme music. Show Over!
Next Time: The mind-numbing hunt for the Lights of Orion continues!
