Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 27
Original Airdate: 11-1-1999
Last Time: Leo decided to take up gambling on motorcycle races!
In the park, the Rangers are sparring, more specifically, Maya is fighting Damon. Obviously it would be a bit awkward to show a dude beating up a chick, so Damon loses.
On the Command Carrier, Vilemax and Deviot are debated whether this week's monster is any good. Deviot claims the monster, Loyax, is washed up. Vilemax claims that he'll bring a veteran presence to the clubhouse. Trakeena agrees to see him. Loyax comes in and explains that he's getting old and wants to fight one last fight. Trakeena decides to send him in, retirony be damned! Credits!
At one of Terra Venture's sea shores....yeah, there are sea shores on a space colony, apparently, Loyax is gearing himself up to fight the Rangers. The Rangers get called in to fight him almost immediately. The Rangers confront him and Maya charges in first. Loyax is pretty pissed about the prospect of getting beaten up by a girl and chokes Maya for a bit. Then he beats up the Rangers with his giant spiked mace-head. Maya attacks him again, and Loyax won't let up about the whole "girl" thing. Leo tries to intervene, but Maya drags both herself and the monster over a cliff and into the sea.
The other Rangers head to the beach, but can't find Maya. On the command carrier, Deviot informs Trakeena that Loyax is already defeated, but Trakeena makes Deviot go down and try to salvage the monster.
In some cave, Loyax is explaining to Maya how humiliating it is to be beaten by a girl. Maya, despite hailing from a primitive culture much more likely to enforce strict gender roles, takes the feminist position that being beaten by a girl is no worse than being beaten by a man. She is obviously wrong, and that's the one thing I'd take away from this episode. (Note: I'm kidding, okay?) He throws Maya some sort of med-kit for her injuries. Loyax needs Maya's help. Why? He's old and has bad night vision. No, really. He also has an enlarged prostate. Together, they escape the cave.
Loyax then turns on Maya, because he's still itching for that final, glorious battle. Deviot shows up with some Sting Wingers to make damn sure that Maya gets killed, but Loyax finds such tactics dishonorable, and helps Maya fight them off. Deviot is reasonably pissed, and decides to kill them both. The other Rangers hear the commotion and head off to help. Loyax tries to fight Deviot, but Deviot knocks him down and is ready to shoot him, even coming up with a pithy one-liner, "Honor this, Loyax!" Of course, Maya interrupts Deviot's attack and escapes with Loyax.
Loyax then asks if Maya is ready to fight now. Maya doesn't really want to fight him, and this triggers Loyax's tragic backstory. You see, back in the day, Loyax was a good guy, but eventually turned to evil because...I don't know, he's not very clear on the why. It doesn't really matter, because according to Dante's Inferno, the lowest circle of hell is reserved for traitors, so Loyax is fucked. Then again, Dante also reserved the absolute worst spot in hell for Judas, but also Brutus and Cassius, which always struck me as odd. Maybe it's an Italian thing or something, but you'd think that a Christian writer would regard the betrayal of Jesus as worse than the betrayal of a military dictator.
Where was I? Oh, yes, Maya wants Loyax to be good again, but he'd rather fight Maya to the death. Meanwhile, Deviot runs into the other Rangers and blasts them. Back at the beach, Maya is still arguing for Loyax to return to goodness, but Loyax presses the issue by attacking Maya. Maya eventually defeats him, but Loyax is insistent that she destroy him, as only by dying in glorious battle can he ascend to Valhalla, but Maya won't do it. He seems receptive until Deviot, who's as bored of this whole affair as I am, shoots him with some sort of chemical that makes him giant and evil.
The Rangers call out the Galaxy Megazord, but are reluctant to do the monster any harm. They call on the Centaurus Megazord, and are able to break Deviot's control. So Deviot goes with plan B, and detonates the monster, and that's the end of Loyax. Later, the Rangers head back to the beach and remember the monster. Today's lesson is that you shouldn't let villains plant bombs on or in your body. Show Over!
Next Time: Hey, remember how you were saying, "Damn it all, if only Leo got more screen time, then I'd finally be happy!" No, that conversation never happened? Oh....
