Facing the Past

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 33

Original Airdate: 11-9-1999

Last Time: Kendrix was still suffering from her case of being vaporized, so the Rangers were forced to recast the role of Pink Ranger.

At the quarry, Trakeena introduces this week's monster, Magnetox. He successfully beats up a bunch of Sting Wingers as a test, and is sent out to harass the Rangers.

Back on Terra Venture, Karone is playing around with some children, and no parents seem concerned about the blonde woman who wears only tight leather and nobody actually knows hanging around their kids. Leo shows up to play with the kids to, as he is still unemployed. By the way, how do you think the Rangers explained Kendrix's death to the leaders of Terra Venture? "Hey, Commander Stantion? You know Kendrix, that blonde scientist with the glasses? Well, she had to go to....a peace conference...forever. Gotta run!" The kids are also all wearing jumpsuits, because the writers occaisionally remembers the premise of the series. The writers then decide to punish me for bringing that up by making me watch the footage of Karone getting kidnapped as a child again. On the plus side, I get to see Darkonda again. She broods about her dark past briefly. Magnetox shows up. Credits! Kendrix is still listed in the credits, and so is Karone, oddly enough.

Magnetox attacks and Leo gets his morpher wrecked. The Rangers decide to run away. Later, Alpha explains that Leo's powers have been drained. The news causes Karone to remember this warrior she fought when she was Astronema. She remembers turning him to stone right before he unleashed some sort of devastating attack that involves putting to keys together. Also, Ecliptor is in the flashback. Hi, Ecliptor! She figures that those keys might restore Leo's powers, and so they head off to try.

Meanwhile, the other Rangers and Mike fight Magnetox. They don't do well and Kai and Maya lose their powers. Elsewhere, Leo and Karone find the cave where the stone warrior should be, but Karone gets called out by some nearby skeletons for her evil past, and has to fight her old, Astronema self in order to be allowed to get the power-restoring keys. Even worse, her evil self still retains her power of overacting!

Astronema manages to hold Leo hostage and demands that Karone sacrifice herself for Leo. Karone agrees and thus passes the morality test! Back on Terra Venture, Magnetox steals Damon and Mike's powers. Damon stays behind to delay the monster and manages to get badly beaten for his efforts.

Back in the cave, Karone and Leo find the petrified warrior, but the keys are gone. Leo decides to leave while Karone apologizes to the warrior for turning him to stone. She cries on him, and magically brings the warrior back to life....somehow. Then again, last season Karone was herself brought back to life with tears, so maybe that's just how these things work in the Power Rangers universe. The warrior gives Leo the keys, which give him back his powers, and a little something extra besides.

Back on Terra Venture, Karone and Leo arrive and Leo shows off his hideous Battlilizer Armor. It looks incredibly awkward and comes with boots shaped like blocks of cement. I probably would have thought it was cool when I was twelve, though. Wait a minute, I was around twelve when this show came out and I don't ever remember thinking, "Man, it would be awesome if the Red Ranger had to lug 100 pounds of metal on his shoulders!" Anyway, Leo kills the monster with his new toy and restores the Rangers' powers. No time for a megazord fight, so the Rangers just talk about how cool the Battilizer is instead.

Later, the male Rangers are playing some football while Maya and Karone talk about their feelings. Hooray traditional gender roles! Then Karone and Maya spray the other Rangers with a nearby hose. Seems like they wouldn't want you to waste water like that on a space colony with presumably limited water supplies....but, well, the next time Terra Venture is actually treated like a space vessel will be the first. Show Over!

Next Time: Damon learns an important lesson about...let's say cheating.
