Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 23
Original Airdate: 10-26-1999
Last Time: Trakeena took over the position of evil overlord and it was rather depressing to be honest. Also, I reached the mid-point of the season!
A little girl's car is stuck in a tree and Maya comes up to help. She climbs up the tree and rescues the cat. It just occurred to me that no one seems to question Maya's existence on the space colony, despite the fact that she's the only person around wearing some sort of fur halter and miniskirt combination. Or, at least, she was, as Maya spies another person wearing similar clothes, and recognizes her as her friend from Mirinoi. Credits!
Now, you might think that Maya would be suspicious that her friend is suddenly on Terra Venture, given everyone on Mirinoi was turned to stone....and they didn't have space travel anyway. But, no, instead Maya flashes back to her childhood memories of her friend, Shondra. Shondra explains that she escaped by means of a magical portal, which convinces Maya. The situation turns awkward when Maya discusses bringing Shondra to meet Kendrix, who Maya claims is her best friend...on Terra Venture.
At the lab, Kendrix is still trying to figure out the MacGuffin book when Maya introduces her to Shondra. Kendrix suggests they have a celebration, and Shondra glares ominously at the MacGuffin Book.
Later, Maya and Shondra reminisce some more about Mirinoi, which is only tolerable because I get to see the comically overacting village elder from the first episode again. The over Rangers, meanwhile, have prepared an elaborate dinner and are waiting for the pair to arrive.....and wait they do, because the pair are too busy talking about Mirinoi to show up. This emotionally devestates Kendrix, and the other Rangers disperse.
Later that night, Maya and Shondra finally show up, and they don't seem to notice that Kendrix has been waiting all night for them. They all go to sleep, but Shondra wakes up later so to move the plot along. Kendrix notices, but doesn't do anything. Shondra meets with Trakeena and Vilemax, who reveal that Shondra is a monster named Rycon, and was sent to Terra Venture to steal the MacGuffin Book. Trakeena explains that "the Rangers will pay" for killing Scorpius, although I don't know how stealing a book constitutes revenge.
At the lab, we learn that Terra Venture guards are a higher breed of incompetent security, as they spend their time playing backgammon instead of looking out for criminals. Obviously, they completely fail to stop Shondra from breaking into the lab, and we finally see Shondra's true form...it's some sort of ancient Egyptian monster, from the looks of it. Fortunately, the monster proves just as incompetent as the guards, and manages to set off the alarms before she can steal the book and has to retreat. One guard manages to shoot her in the leg, though.
Shondra limps back to the apartment and sneaks back into her bed, but Kendrix notices her coming in with a damaged leg. The next day, Commander Stanton and Kendrix arrive to hear the guard explaining what had happened the last night, and Kendrix is able to pretty much figure out exactly what's going on in under ten seconds. Competence? From a main character? Kendrix is not long for this world.
Kendrix goes back to the Galactic Apartment and is looking for Shondra. Maya explains that her friend "had stuff to do." Kendrix tries to explain to Maya, as nicely as possible, that her friend is almost certainly a thief, but Maya, predictably, accuses Kendrix of being jealous of Shondra. I guess we can add basic logic to the list of things they didn't have on Mirinoi.
Maya goes chasing after Shondra, only to find her walking around looking as suspicious as possible. Shondra breaks into the lab again, and manages to divert the guards this time. Maya finds her there, and learns that someone has just stolen the MacGuffin Book. Maya realizes that, yeah, Shondra did steal the book, but can't stop her from escaping. Maya pursues her by repelling down the side of the building. Where did she get the rope for that? And wouldn't it be faster just to take the stairs? Somehow, this allows Maya to ambush Shondra, and they fight for a bit before Maya hesitates at the thought of hurting her friend, and that allows Shondra to shift into her monster form.
They fight for a bit, and then the other Rangers show up, and the Lights of Orion finish off the monster. It's time for the Megazord fight! The Galaxy Megazord fails, so they call on the Stratoforce. It runs around the monster really quickly and then punches him. Apparently that's enough, and the Galaxy Megazord finishes the monster off.
In park, Maya and Kendrix reconcile and walk off with their arms on each other's shoulders, so as to inspire some slightly disturbing fanfiction down the road. Show Over!
Next Time: Damon's very own episode!
