Journey's End, Part II

Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy, Episode 44

Original Airdate: 12-17-1999

Last Time: Deviot and Trakeena kind of got jumbled together in the cocoon and that somehow led to suicide Sting Wingers. Also, Commander Stanton finally ran Terra Venture into the ground in the most literal way he could manage.

On Terra Venture, everyone's still evacuation. Outside the colony, Stratoforce and Centaurus are trying to prevent the suicide bugs from making it to the colony. They don't do a very good job and end up covered in suicide bombers as other Sting Wingers make it inside the city. Credits!

The bugs are suicide-bombing the shit out of Terra Venture, and Bulk and Phenomenus run for their lives. Hi, Bulk! It's been, like, twenty episodes since I'd seen you and I'd kind of forgotten you were still on this show. I think the writers forgot too.

The Rangers fight the Sting Wingers, but Leo learns the hard way that it's dangerous to fight bugs with bombs strapped to their chests as he gets blown up. This hurts him much less than you'd expect, though. The other Rangers also manage to get hurt by the explosive Sting Wingers. Vilemax watches some Sting Wingers clamber onto a building and blow it and themselves up, and is less than pleased when he sees something run past his field of vision. It's a little girl and Vilemax saves her from some falling rubble. He then helps her find her mother and gets some flowers as a reward. And Vilemax's heart grew three sizes that day!

Outside, Stratoforce and Centaurus are almost completely covered with explosive-armed Sting Wingers. This does not bode well for them. Alpha calls into inform Leo of this situation, but the Rangers realize that Terra Venture also has a suicide bomber problem and can't leave. Stratoforce and Centaurus are both completely destroyed by the suicide bombers and Vilemax looks on with disgust.

In the city, the Rangers are having difficulty dealing with the suicide Sting Wingers, but are eventually able to take them all out. Unfortunately, the dome is still crumbling and the Rangers realize that they need to get the people out of Terra Venture quickly. On the command carrier, Trakeena wants Vilemax to lead her army into the colony to capture the Rangers, and Vilemax informs her that she kind of blew up her entire supply of Sting Wingers in the suicide attacks. Trakeena decides to blow up the Rangers herself.

People are still getting on shuttles to leave Terra Venture and Bulk shows about again, which just about doubles his screentime this season. Mike finds Commander Stanton still on the bridge, musing about how he's managed to get the entire colony destroyed. The people of Terra Venture finally leave the colony on a fleet of shuttles.

Lamentably, the shuttles have no defenses, and Trakeena decides to kill everyone in the shuttles with the command carrier. She orders Vilemax to begin firing, and he looks at the flowers he got from the little girl and realizes that he really, really, really doesn't want to murder thousands of unarmed civilians. On one of the shuttles, the little girl spots the command carrier, and everyone realizes they're about to die.

Vilemax, however, has had enough and refuses to fire, and tries to convince Trakeena not to kill everybody. She starts shooting Vilemax, who refuses to fight, because he's learned something about the true nature of good and evil....which doesn't save him from being murdered by Trakeena. She points out the irony that he's the one who taught her to fight. Kegler, on the other hand, would much rather he survive than some civilians, and so stays by her side even though she just killed his friend in cold blood.

The Rangers, however, have used this time to get the ol' Megaship and is able to protect the shuttle fleet. Trakeena elects to ram the Megaship which pretty much destroys it. Suddenly, the voice of T.J. reaches across the universe to give Leo an idea: self-destruct the Megaship! This proves to be a stupid idea, as the Rangers realizes too late that the Jet Jammers can't get them off of the exploding ship. Since them all dying in a catastrophic explosion of their own making would be too depressing a season finale, they're able to rescue Alpha and get the doors open shortly before the ship goes up in flame. The force of the explosion is such that the commander carrier and Leo crash on the moon.

On the planet, the Rangers find Alpha, and the colonist land safely. Well, that's that then. Kai wonders where Leo is, but I guess it's one of those season-ending mysteries. On the moon, Leo crawls from the wreckage of his Jet Jammer, and I realize that there's no way to wrap things up in two minutes. Oh, fuck. On the ruins of the command carrier, Trakeena enters the cocoon again to get even more powerful, and, Christ, when will this season end? To Be Continued!

Next Time: The really real ending to this season, I promise.
