The Turn of the Wretched Wrench

Power Rangers Turbo, Episode 34

Original Airdate: 10-31-1997

Last Time: We all learned a lesson about something, or something.

Down at the Tommy Oliver Memorial Auto Shop, Carlos and Ashley are trying to fix a car. They manage to blacken the auto shop teacher's face instead. Ashley wonders why she took auto shop. I also wonder. Up in space, Divatox's periscope isn't working. Elgar suggest they call a guy named the Maniac Mechanic to fix it. With a name like that, I can't see how it could fail! The Maniac Mechanic instantly shows up. She orders him to fix the periscope, and then attack the Rangers. Divatox has a plan! Credits!

Back on Earth, Ashley is driving along, and her car breaks down. In space, Maniac Mechanic has fixed the periscope. Divatox commissions a battlewagon. On Earth, Ashley has no clue how to fix her car. At tow truck helpfully shows up. It's driven by Bulk and Skull! They manage to break Ashley's car some more. Elgar and some Piranhatrons show up to steal some car parts. He orders the Piranhatrons to keep Ashley busy while he takes parts from her car. Bulk is still trying to attach to tow hook to Ashley's car as well. Elgar manages to take what he needs, and leaves with the parts. Ashley's car is completely wrecked. On the other hand, it was piss-yellow and looked to be about twenty years old, so really, it's not much of a loss. Did Dimitria make the Rangers repaint their cars to match their Rangers colors or something. "No, Ashley, you can't have a red car, you're the Yellow Ranger."

Down at the juice bar, Bulk and Skull drop Ashley off. By their standards, this may be Bulk and Skull's best job performance yet. Ashley meets the other Rangers. T.J. and the other Rangers give her a wrench as a gift. Justin explains that it's a lucky wrench. Shut up, Justin! Ashley explains that she's taking auto shop to spite her father, who believes girls can't work on cars. So far, the old man's right. Bulk and Skull have another job, but get milkshakes instead. Ashley explains that Divatox stole some parts from her car. The other Rangers are mildly concerned.

Back in auto shop, Ashley can't put a carburetor back together. Fun fact: carburetors have not been used on normal cars since 1990. Now, the show was made in 1997, but even still...Ashley gets depressed that she forgot the gasket. Carlos encourages because "she knows this stuff." Well, that's certainly one theory. Bulk and Skull show up to drop off a car, but have lost everything except the chassis. Maniac Mechanic plans to steal it just the same. He disguises himself as...it's kind of hard to describe. He's a spazzy teenager who wears some sort of patchwork sports coat and giggles inappropriately every few words or so. It's probably not the best way to avoid detection. He's welcomed into the auto shop and declares his name to be Manny. He gets to Ashley and compliments her on "her wonderful wrench." The auto shop teacher would like to see Ashley, he suggest she spend extra time at the garage so she'll stop sucking as hard. Manny is wandering around laughing maniacally. No one seems particularly concerned.

Later, Ashley is repeating the events of the last scene to Carlos, who was also there. Carlos volunteers to go to the garage with her. In Space, Divatox's goons are explaining that the Maniac Mechanic hasn't finished the battlewagon, which is a problem seeing as he's building it in the garage Carlos and Ashley are headed towards. Divatox sends in the Piranhatrons to distract the Rangers and kill clock. The Piranhatrons are able to stall the Rangers, making this their most successful episode ever. Also, Ashley is wearing a short plaid skirt today, and I approve.

Carlos and Ashley get to the auto shot and see Manny working on something under a large sheet. They notice the ominous vehicle. Manny: "Look under there....you'll find out the hard way!" He reveals that he's really the Maniac Mechanic. He escapes on the battlewagon, which, to be honest, looks kind of like a knockoff of the Batmobile. And hey, you know what stupid accessory we haven't seen in while? The Turbo Go-Karts! Ashley speeds off at nearly twenty miles per hour. Justin reminds us why we haven't seen the go-karts for so long when he drives by on Storm Blaster and picks up Carlos. Maniac Mechanic turns Ashley's wrench, you know, the one from before, evil and breaks her go-kart. The Rangers pursue on Lightning Cruiser and Storm Blaster.

Maniac Mechanic shoots some exhaust at Lightning Cruiser, and then shoots some missiles and buzzsaws. The chase continues, regardless, though Storm Blaster gets stopped. Justin wonders what they're going to do. Carlos explains that they're going to fix it! The Maniac Mechanic realizes that he's way better armed than the Rangers and starts chasing Lightning Cruiser. Carlos figures out the the problem with Storm Blaster is the carburetor. He recalls Ashley successfully rebuilt one in class. He recalls incorrectly. Carlos and Justin head out to help T.J. and Cassie while Ashley tries to fix Storm Blaster. At the fight, the Rangers get shot up by Maniac Mechanic's car. Elsewhere, Ashley successfully repairs Storm Blaster. By Power Rangers Rules, this means she is now a highly proficient car mechanic, ignoring all mistakes made in the earlier parts of this episode. She drives up to the fight and jumps on the battlewagon. She takes back her wrench and blows up the battlewagon with her gun.

Torp Time! The Rescue Megazord gets called. The Turbo Megazord, meanwhile, sits in its compartment, remembering the days when it got to do stuff. The fight doesn't last long, even by the standards of this show. Maniac Mechanic gets blown up. Up in space, Divatox is less-than-pleased, and Porto notes that the warranty for the Maniac Mechanic's repairs is only two seconds long. And it starts running from when the warranty is read, apparently, as the periscope falls apart.

On Earth, Ashley is explaining how she fixed Storm Blaster. Carlos, Justin and I don't care. Bulk and Skull's tow truck has broken down, but now that Ashley fixed one thing, she is now the best mechanic ever, and so only she can save the day. But not before she unfairly accuses Bulk of sexism. Bulk and Skull have already been fired, though, and the episode ends with everyone laughing at the pair's unemployment. Show Over!

Next Time: What's the one thing worse than one irritating child actor on this show?

Fire in Your Tank

Power Rangers Turbo, Episode 33

Original Airdate: 10-30-1997

Last Time: There was some wishing and stuff and I'd prefer not to talk about it again.

T.J. is tooling around in Lightning Cruiser. In fairness, if I had a flying car, I would also be tooling around. The Rangers have apparently developed a new fuel for the car. Meanwhile, Divatox is holding a tryout for new monsters. She is unimpressed. Lightning Cruiser flies overhead, and Divatox decides to try and steal it again. Credits!

T.J, is still flying Lightning Cruiser and Divatox still wants it. Porto points out that it's not going to happen. Divatox is insistent. A monster overhears and sees his opportunity to make a mark in Power Rangers Monster History. The monster claims he can breate fire....he can't. He doesn't get the job. But the monster is determined to make a go of it anyway. I like his spunk.

At the forest, Bulk and Skull have new jobs as fire spotters, protecting against forest fires. Well, fuck, that's just insane. Angel Grove is going to burn to the ground. The fire-based monster runs right by them into the forest. T.J. lands Lightning Cruiser and is enthused about the new booster fuel. They're about to start the next test when they hear a voice from the woods. It's the monster, he threatens to burn them all, but still can't get his fire breath to work. The Rangers are unimpressed, so the monster steal their booster fuel and runs away. The Rangers morph and give chase. Elgar and Rygog move in now that the Rangers have been distracted....but the magic cars are alive, so they're able to alert the Rangers, who head back. Some Piranhatrons show up but well...you know.

Bulk and Skull are nearby in a lookout tower, but they're too busy reading comic books and listening to music to notice. Then again, if they did notice, it's not like they'd be able to do anything anyway. Elgar tries to steal Lightning Cruiser with a net, it does not go well. The Piranhatrons finally go down, and T.J. calls in Justin and Carlos. That's about enough for Elgar and Rygog, who call it day and teleport out. The Rangers do notice that the booster fuel has been stolen.

Divatox's goon have stopped off because they can't go back to the Space Base without a flying car. Porto decides that since they have the booster fuel, they'll build their own flying car, damn it! I really kind of like these guys, if only because they're so completely harmless. I mean, they once came up with a plan to cook the Rangers into a pizza. Back at the training ground from earlier, the goons show off their hand-built flying car. It looks awful and Divatox isn't exactly thrilled. The car does manage to work, though. Good on the goons.

Elsewhere, the monster of the week puts some booster fuel in his bike, and makes it go fast...very briefly. The monster then logic determines if it the fuel works on his bike, it'll work on him, and it does. The moral of today's episode is that drinking engine fuel can give you extra power, but always make sure to use 89 octane or above. He also manages to set the forest on fire. Bulk and Skull continue not to notice, despite the large amount of billowing smoke wafting into their lookout tower. Then again, if you lived in a city that was mostly destroyed by monsters every few days, you'd probably disregard the smell of smoke too.

At the Power Chamber, T.J. ponders what Divatox will do with the booster fuel. He can't come up with anything. The Rangers notice the raging forest fire on the view screen. The head out to the scene and call the Rescue Zords. T.J. pulls out a giant fire exitinguisher! Carlos and Ashley throw two giant stones together to create dust! Wait, that doesn't sound right. The fire is defeated. T.J. still has to rescue Bulk and Skull, which he does with Lightning Cruiser. On the way, he sees Divatox's flying car. T.J. finally solves the case of the missing booster fuel. Divatox aims straight at T.J.. T.J. is alarmed...I think, with Selwyn Ward's performance, it's kind of hard to tell. Divatox's car runs out of booster fuel and crashes. She wants more fuel. The monster of the week took it all, but now he can breathe fire, or, more accurately, he can stand between something blowing fire and the camera. Divatox sends him to his certain doom.

Bulk mistakes smoke for clouds. Skull corrects him. They both realize they are about to die painful, burning deaths. They don't take it well. T.J. shows up with the Lightning Cruiser, but it's a two seater. Bulk jumps in first, and then the show cuts away to the Power Chamber before we realize the producers didn't think it through. The monster shows up, and the Rangers go fight him. He try to shoot him with their blasters, but apparently he can deflect lasers...with fire! Also, he uses his fire breath on the Rangers. Cassie speculates that he'll eventually run out of fuel. T.J. has a plan! T.J. decides to immediately charge directly into the monster's field of fire, in hopes that he is out of fuel. It turns out that he isn't, and blasts the Rangers again. The monster prematurely gloats. The Rangers respond by hitting him with Storm Blaster and blasting him with Lightning Cruiser. Divatox rather glumly signals to fire the torpedoes. Monster=Big, Rescue Megazord=Summoned! The monster, whose name I could never remember is sent to the land of wind and ghosts.

Porto announces that he has analyzed the booster fuel and created his own "evil" version. I immediately wonder what it is that makes a booster fuel righteous in this world. Compassion? A sense of justice? Lower emissions? She learns Elgar was involved with the production of this fuel of immorality, and send him to test it. The car ends up exploding. Down at the juice bar, Bulk and Skull are recounting their adventure. Inevitably, they end up smearing themselves with wet paint. All present laugh at their misfortune. Show Over!

Next Time: Cars! The Defiance of Gender Stereotypes! More Cars!

The Gardener of Evil

Power Rangers Turbo, Episode 32

Original Airdate: 10-20-1997

Last Time: Divatox got some wishing coins, but long story short, only one is left, and Bulk just used it to play pinball. Oh, and the Blue Senturion is evil again.

When we last left our heroes, Bulk and Skull were about to play a game of pinball using the last wishing coin. Being Bulk and Skull, this somehow leads to them utterly destroying the pinball table with the magic coin. Lt. Stone shows up to wonder how the hell that happened, and manages to retrieve the coin. He sends the two away to their new jobs at the nursery, and since the consequences of Bulk and Skull working with children would be far too gruesome for this show, it's a plant nursery.

Up in space, the Wild Weeder is introduced again and once again asks for "vittles." Divatox is skeptical that of a monster with a Southern accent, as all right thinking people should be. But, well, it's all she's got, so she sends him down to find the third coin. The Blue Senturion accompanies him. They find a group of people, and Wild Weeder brainwashes them into helping find the coin. This involves the brainwashed people dressing in yellow and black striped shirts with matching caps for reasons that go far beyond human understanding. Credits!

T.J. and Cassie are walking down the street looking for the third coin. They don't find anything. I would just like to point out that the guy playing T.J. cannot fucking act, at all. It's oddly fascinating in a way, but he is able to manage to make even innocuous lines like calling into to say that he found nothing sound wrong. For what it's worth, the actor, Selwyn Ward, was probably just beginning his career at the time, so maybe he got better. Alpha 6 confirms that the only way to fix Blue Senturion is with the third wish. T.J. and Cassie spot Blue Senturion and Wild Weeder making some more brainwashed people. They morph and call for the rest of team.

Blue Senturion calls of Wild Weeder and decides to take care of the Rangers personally. T.J. tries to reason with him for roughly the 23rd time. It fails for the 23rd time. T.J. decides to try to grap the Wild Weeder's brainwashing seeds, the Blue Senturion stops that action. T.J. tries to reason with the Blue Senturion again, because like the main character from Memento, he has no long-term memory. The Blue Senturion shoots the Rangers some more and then leaves. The Rangers confront the brainwashed masses, but can't get through to them. I think the outfit is supposed to make them look like bees, but why seeds from a monster called Wild Weeder would make people into brainwashed man-bees is a mystery that I cannot begin to fathom. The Rangers decide to go back to looking for the coin.

Down at the nursery, things are not going well for Bulk and Skull as they instinctively recoil against the piles of cow manure that show logic demands will soon cover them. Wild Weeder shows up and brainwashes their boss. Elsewhere, the Blue Senturion and the Wild Weeder have set up an elaborate coin searching pavillion. Justin and Carlos decide to check the juice bar. Mechanics are taking out the wrecked pinball machine. Lt. Stone explains that Bulk and Skull are what happened to wrecked game, more specifically, with a odd-looking coin. Justin and Carlos are keen to find this coin, and Lt. Stone directs them to the plant nursery, so long as Bulk and Skull haven't been fired yet. Hey, show some faith, Lt. Stone, they once managed to hold down a tour guide job for nearly four episodes.

At the nursery, Bulk and Skull are thirsty and decide to use the magic coin to get a drink from a vending machine. The Bee-people stop them. Bulk and Skull freak out, and Divatox finally knows where the coin is. Wild Weeder and Blue Senturion show up and demand the coin. Bulk and Skull, however, tap their reserves of courage and prepare to fight. The other Rangers show up and morph so as to fight. Bulk and Skull withdraw as the Rangers move in. Some Piranhatrons get beaten up, as they so often do. The Wild Weeder has a plan and splits, while Blue Senturion acts as a distraction, but eventually leaves as well. Everyone is now hunting for Bulk and Skull.

This involves calling out Lightning Cruiser and Storm Blaster. They run into Wild Weeder who throws some seeds at the cars, which immediately sprout into vines, which, in turn, summon giant bees. The Rangers must fight the bees for reasons that are not entirely clear. Maybe they're worried about staining the interior...I don't know. The bees win, the bees always win. The Rangers are able to regroup and shoot down the bees, but Wild Weeder responds by shooting them. The Blue Senturion is back, once again, to fight the Rangers. Willd Weeder decides to sit the rest of the fight out. Blue Senturion calls out the Robo Racer. He tries to crush the Rangers with his mech's giant boot.

Bulk and Skull are still running from the bee-people. Bulk and Skull lose them, but realize that they have a wishing coin that they can use, to, you know, make a wish. Bulk starts to make a wish, but that attracts the attention of the merciless bee-ple. Elsewhere, the Robo Racer is still attacking the Rangers, and they call the Rescue Zords. They go into high-stance mode. They circle around the Robo Racer. They background music is encouraging every one to "rock and roll." I'm not sure how that has anything to do with giant robots hitting each, but fine. The Robo Racer is losing.

Bulk and Skull see the robot fight and frantically signal with flags. Justin goes down to deal with them. Bulk relinquishes the coin, but asks if the coin really did have magic powers. Justin confirms that it did. Bulk and Skull walk away dejectedly. Justin decides not to use the wish to bring his dad back home, but to instead wish the Blue Senturion good again. Sporting of him. Blue Senturion is good again! Torpedo time!

Wild Weeder is now giant-sized, as is one of his giant bees. The Rangers call for the Rescue Megazord. Blue Senturion takes the bee, because, as he puts, "This time, it's personal." The Blue Senturion simply cannot adibe evil of an apiary nature. He kills it with his knife. Artillery Power is called for and while Wild Weeder's spirit goes on high, his gross flesh sinks downard, here to die. The bee-people also return to normal.

Later, Carlos finds Justin down at the wishing well. Justin has lost all faith in wishing because he's only successfully executed one wish that day. Carlos tells Justin not to give up on his wishes. I'm guessing that's because Carlos sees Justin's dad walking up in the background. Anyway, Justin's dad shows up and explains that he no longer will be a deadbeat parent, as he has a new job in Angel Grove. Show (Mercifully) Over!

Beware the Third Wise

Power Rangers Turbo, Episode 31

Original Airdate: 10-17-1997

Last Time: I made roughly 100 Blade Runner jokes.

The Rangers are at a wishing well. Ashley wishes for world peace. Hasn't she learned anything from The Simpsons? Justin has a wish so important that he's using his lucky coin, the one his dad gave to him. He wishes his dad would come back. Man, if his dad does come back, he's going to be pissed Justin threw his gift away in a wishing well. The Rangers decide to go grab so food. Suddenly, a monster shows up and steals some coins, including Justin's, from the wishing well. Wish denied, Justin, wish denied. Credits!

Back at the wishing well, Justin demands the monster put his lucky coin back in the well. The monster and Rygog mock Justin. I like where this episode is headed. Rygog wishes for some Piranhatrons to show up and pad out the episode. Rygog gets his wish. They fight for a bit, and then Blue Senturion shows up. That's one Ranger too far for the villains, and they flee. Cassie wonders why Divatox wants coins from the wishing well.

Up in the Space Base, we find out. The monster turns three coins from the well into three magical coins that can each grant a wish. Divatox wishes for the Rangers to be destroyed and the series comes to a stop. But I kid. Divatox is pissed, however, at there only being three wishing coins. The monster claims that's the best he can do, and isn't this one of those situation where you can wish for more wishes? Elgar takes one of the coins and wishes for a full head of hair. He gets it. Divatox uses her second wish for the Blue Senturion to be evil. Incidentally, the coin used is from Costa Rica, making me sure that the writers intended to confront police brutality in Central America. Also, hasn't Divatox already tried the whole "Blue Senturion is evil" thing before...twice now? It's not like it worked out great back then.

Anyway, the Blue Senturion is evil again. He displays his evilness by destroying a bicycle. Down at the Power Chamber, Dimitria explains that the Wicked Wisher, the name of today's monster, can make wishing coins. T.J. has a plan! It's to take all of the coins out of the wishing well so that Divatox can't have anymore wishes. Really, T.J.?

It turns out that he's too late to put his idiotic plan into effect because the Wicked Wisher is already at the well trying to empower some more coins, but he can't quite make it work right. T.J. attacks, eventually shooting Wicked Wisher with his gun and then asking if he "wishes to continue." Divatox sends in her newest weapon. The Blue Senturion shows up, and T.J. is glad to see him. The Blue Senturion responds by almost running T.J. down on his motorcycle. The Blue Senturion shoots T.J. a few times, and T.J. can't believe that the Blue Senturion would turn evil....again. T.J. is very confused, despite the Wicked Wisher explaining the Divatox had wished for the Blue Senturion to be evil. T.J. ends up shooting a gun that somehow ties the Blue Senturion up and then runs away. Ol' Blue escapes and pursues.

In space, Wicked Wisher has brought Divatox some coins...but they don't grant wishes, they are only going for being exchanged for goods and services. Divatox is about to use her last wish to destroy the Power Rangers when Elgar accidently bumps into her and sends the coin hurtled from her space balcony down to Earth. It happens to be Justin's lucky coin to boot. She throws Elgar after it.

Back on Earth, Bulk and Skull are now plumbers. Hey, at least they're trying new things. By literal cosmic accident, they get fired, but they do manage to obtain the last wishing coin. In the Power Chamber, Justin is still moping about his dad not being there. Carlos and Justin have a rap session about parental abandonment. T.J. muses that if Divatox has used one wish, and has three wishes total, then she has.....two wishes left! The Rangers get alerted to a disturbance in the park, where Wicked Wished and Blue Senturion are taking everyone's wallets. They're looking for Justin's lucky coin. The Rangers morph and head out.

At the park, the Blue Senturion asks to fight the Rangers personally. The Rangers are wary of hurting their robot pal. The Blue Senturion is not as concerned, and shoots them with his gun. T.J. tries reasoning with him. It doesn't work and he beats them all up. T.J. tries to reason with him again. Blue shows off a new attack that allows him to shoot all of the Rangers with one shot. The Rangers get serious. The Wicked Wisher shows up and clobbers them. This, however, displeases the Blue Senturion, but he gets over after the Wicked Wisher throws some explosive coins at the Rangers. T.J. calls for the Turbine Laser. The Wicked Wisher goes down. What time is it? Torpedo time! Blue Senturion gets recalled to the Space Base. The Wicked Wisher is big, so is the Rescue Megazord, available at all quality retailers. The Wicked Wisher puts up a good fight, but it's not happening. Artillery Power is called for, and the Wicked Wisher goes to the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns.

Divatox stills wants that third coin. Porto introduces a new monster named Wild Weeder to do just that. The monster immediately asks for "vittles." I have reservations about the efficacy of this monster. The Rangers also head out to search for the coin. At the juice bar, Bulk and Skull use the coin to play pinball. To Be Continued! Wait, that's the cliffhanger? Are am supposed to be wondering whether or not Bulk will beat the high score? I demand a better cliffhanger!

Next Time: Bulk wins a free game, but loses it all after a poorly timed tilt!

The Robot Ranger

Power Rangers Turbo, Episode 30

Original Airdate: 10-03-1997

Last Time: The Phantom Ranger arc ended and I was very grateful.

At the juice bar, Bulk and Skull have new jobs as tennis ball boys. They want to be tennis instructors. Lt. Stone does not. In a stunning twist, Ashley gets covered in smoothie. All present do not laugh at her misfortune, for she is neither Bulk and Skull nor Lt. Stone, and therefore apparently has social value. She grabs a towel and wipes off the smoothie, making sure to get it out of the circuits in her arm. Justin is confused that Ashley has circuits in her arm to begin with. Justin's conclusion, "She's not real." First of all, at the very least the Blue Senturion is a robot, so you'd think he'd be a bit more understanding. Second, Justin will not do well when the robots crush mankind. Credits!

Ashley has closed up her arm and Bulk and Skull take her to the tennis court. She asks Justin if he wants to go. He almost pisses himself and declines. T.J. shows up and starts acting robotically, so, normally, then. Justin corrals T.J. into helping him with his nascent Blade Running. At the tennis court, Bulk and Skull struggle to not screw up. Despite heroic efforts, the fail. Justin's trying to explain that Ashley's a robot, possibly from the Tyrell corporation. T.J. seems unconcerned. We learn Bulk is not good at tennis. Ashley hits a ball inhumanly fast, so fast that it smashes into the fence and is smoking. Ashley is not very good at pretending to be human. Skull accidently sets the machine to shoot at balls at super-speed, but Ashley is able to suspiciously keep up. T.J. is still unconvinced. Bulk and Skull are confused at what's happening.

Divatox decides to send down a monster called Flashhead, just because. His power is to turn people into plates of film with his flashes. The monster heads down to the tennis court. Justin theorizes that if it's not the real Ashley, that it can't morph. T.J. refuses to follow Justin's plan, just as well as they all immediately morph anyway. Justin is convinced and goes in to help. The fight goes about as well as you'd expect, and Elgar manages to defeat his own Piranhatrons with the ball machine. Flashhead flees and the Rangers pursue. They fight again and Flashhead manages to get the Rangers wrapped in film, trapping them. It's worth noting that the editing here is bad even by Power Rangers standards, as the Rangers go from a sunny day in a wooded area to the Japanese footage of a cloudy day in the plains. Anyway, the Rangers escape and blast Flashhead. Divatox calls for Torpedoes quite a bit earlier than usual.

Flashhead grows and the Rangers match him with the Rescue Megazord, which is priced to move. Artillery Power is called for and delivered and the monster is defeated. Divatox is displeased, and decides there's enough time to call for another monster. Back at the juice bar, Justin apologizes for thinking that Ashley was a robot. Carlos calls Justin over for math help. The rest of the Rangers think Justin knows too much.

Later in school, Justin notices T.J. recharging his batteries...right in the middle of the hallway. Apparently they don't want people to know they're robots, but not enough to take even the slightest precaution. Justin has figured out that T.J. is a robot, and didn't need to administer the Voight-Kampff test. He also gets surrounded by RobotAshley and RobotCassie. He loudly screams that they're all robots. No other students seem to particularly care. Justin escapes as the titular robot Rangers pursue him at walking speed, as is robot tradition.

In space, Porto has the new monster ready, the Voltmeister. He's got a whip. He's sent off to fight the Rangers. On Earth, Justin is running from the robots. He runs into Carlos and manages to hurt him. The fact that Carlos feels pain convinces Justin that he's not a robot. Justin explains the situation, Carlos is disbelieving. T.J. calls them on the communicator, but they get interrupted by the monster alert. Yeah, apparently there's a monster alert, sure. They morph and join the other Rangers in fighting the Voltmeister. The monster manages to knock them down a hill and demorphs them. Justin gets up and walks over to Carlos....and notices that Carlos' face has fallen off. Not only is he a robot, but not a particularly well-built one, either! Carlos puts his face back on as Justin realizes that not even Deckard could get out of this one. T.J. solemnly orders them all teleported to the Power Chamber.

At the Power Chamber, Justin attempts to warn Alpha 6 that the other Rangers are robots. Alpha 6 points out the she is also a robot. Another team of Rangers runs in. Justin is very confused. Dimitria explains that it's all part of an experiment conducted by Zordon and Alpha 5 to see if replicants of the Rangers were viable. Justin sees another Justin in the doorway. I'm pretty sure the manufacturing of another Justin is a war crime, Zordon. The Justin in the doorway explains that they needed a robot who didn't know he was a robot, i.e. the Justin we've been following all episode. Justin reactivates RobotJustin's memory chips. Wait, isn't creating a sentient being and then convincing him that he's Justin just about the most evil thing you can do?

Divatox has a schedule to keep and so has already giant-sized Voltmeister. The real Rangers call the Rescuezords. Artillery Power and another monster no longer is among us. Divatox can't believe she lost two monsters in one day. The Robot Rangers get sent off to their lives of unending war, when they are destroyed, it isn't called death, it's called retirement. The two Justins talk, and that's....that's much, much more Justin that any person can handle. The Robot Rangers leave and we never have to see them again, thank God. Show Over!

Next Time: Wishes! The Blue Senturion is evil again! Less Justins!

Clash of the Megazords

Power Rangers Turbo, Episode 29

Original Airdate: 09-26-1997

Last Time: Cassie blundered into a trap set by General Havoc. Then the rest of the Rangers blundered into another trap set by General Havoc. Then the Rangers beat him up with their new, and affordable, Rescue Megazord. However, they couldn't get the Phantom Ranger's power ruby back, so now he's dying....or is he?

At the Power Chamber, the Rangers are looking for the Space Base. They fail. Dimitria reminds that if Divatox figures out how to use the power ruby, they'll be boned. Elsewhere, T.J. and Cassie go into the Phantom Ranger's underground access tunnels. They manage to find the Phantom Ranger's ship. Also, the Phantom Ranger's slumped over body. He's unresponsive. More New Credits!

Up in space, Porto is getting the Turbo Megazord ready. Elgar points out that the new Rescue Megazord blew up the Metallisaurus, which, itself defeated the Turbo Megazord. Therefore, by the transitive propery, this plan isn't going to work. Divatox figures that she can give it more power by jamming the power ruby into the Turbo Megazord.

The Phantom Rangers isn't doing too well. Dimitria informs the Rangers that only the power ruby can save him now. T.J. says that they have to get to the Space Base. Carlos says that it's impossible, as he usually does. T.J. has a plan! He plans to drag her Space Base to Earth with a giant magnet. Oh, T.J. Apparently, they have to wait for Divatox to drop her shields first, though. They morph and begin work on T.J.'s plan.

In space, Porto and Rygog install the ruby into a battery pack that they put onto the Turbo Megazord. Back on Earth, the Rangers continue to prepare their magnet beam. The Space Base shield are down! Unfortunately, it turns out that that's because Divatox is about to launch the Turbo Megazord at the Power Rangers. The Rangers turn on the magnet beam and it begins pulling the Space Base towards Earth. Divatox sends down the Metal Mangler to distract the Rangers...unfortunately, the beam is magnetic and Metal Mangler is made of metal....so it doesn't quite work out. She sends down a non-metal based monster instead. The monster shows up with a bunch of Piranhatrons. The Rangers fight them off, but one brave Piranhatron, against all odds and with the courage of a lion, heroically makes it past the Rangers and shuts down the magnet beam. It's the greatest moment in Piranhatron history.

It doesn't last, as Cassie knocks him to the ground and turns the magnet beam back on. But then the monster gets through and busts up the magnet beam beyond repair. Divatox finally launches the Megazord. The Rangers have to abandon the magnet beam and deal with the Turbo Megazord. T.J. is surprised to see the Turbo Megazord, and notices that there's something different about it, namely the battery pack, also, the evil. They call the Rescue Megazord. ....And the promised clash of the Megazords begins. The monster controlling the Phantom Megazord taunts the Rangers that the Turbo Megazord is now powered by the power ruby. Loose words sink Zords, monster-whose-name I forgot. The two megazords blow the crap out of each other. In the Power Chamber, Alpha 6 reminds the Rangers not to blow up the power ruby, because that would be bad. She starts searching for the exact location of the power ruby.

Up in space, Divatox demands action! The Turbo Megazord's batteries need to recharge. The two zord wait there, motionless. This...isn't much of a clash. Alpha locates the ruby. It's in the battery pack. The Turbo Megazord busts out the chest guns and its sword. But suddenly, T.J. has a plan! Carlos would like to know exactly what that plan is. T.J. explains that he's going to use Lightning Cruiser to get the ruby back. I think that his plan might be missing a few steps. Carlos claims that T.J. is either the "the bravest guy I know, or the craziest." Hey, he could also just be the dumbest. The Turbo Megazord uses the 'spin-out' and the Rescue Megazord goes down. T.J. is speeding towards the battle in Lightning Cruiser while the Turbo Megazord is about to finish off its replacement. Just then, T.J. manages to somehow get into the cockpit of the Turbo Megazord and starts fighting the monster, starting a running battle throughout the heretofore unseen corridors inside the giant robot. He eventually makes it to the top of the battery pack and finds the ruby, but the monster interrupts him. They duel on top of the battery pack.

T.J. loses his sword and it looks grim, so he just shoots the monster with his blaster instead. That doesn't seem very sporting. He knocks the monster off the battery pack and takes the ruby. T.J. finishes off the monster by shooting at the giant battery pack and causing it to fall on the monster. Now, reading this over, you might think, "Wait, wasn't he standing on the battery pack?" Indeed he was, but you see....he...let's say he teleported. Divatox decides she might as well fire the torpedoes. The Rescue Megazord blows the giant monster to bits.

Back at the Power Chamber, Cassie puts the power ruby back into the Phantom Ranger's chest He eventually wakes up, and the Rangers celebrate. Unfortunately, Cassie's daydreams of what to name half-Asian, half-cyborg children are cut short when the Phantom Ranger has to leave, for he must go whoever he is needed, and with that he leaves, and I am grateful. Show Over!

The Fall of the Phantom

Power Rangers Turbo, Episode 28

Original Airdate: 09-25-1997

Last time: The Rangers, bereft of Zords, but with a surfeit of moxie tried to fight the Metallisaurus, but stood nary a chance of victory. However, the redoubtable Phantom Ranger appeared and did supply the team with Zords the likes of which had ne'er been seen before. With powers undreamed, they took back Angel Grove, while in the heavens, General Havoc swore vengeance on the Phantom.

In Angel Grove High, Cassie is sitting on a staircase. She's thinking about the Phantom Ranger some more. The flashbacks remind the audience that the Phantom Ranger has had a grand total of about ten lines of dialogue since he's been introduced. The Principal shows up, and wants to know why Cassie is trying to get out of taking a test. He denies her request. General Havoc rebuilds Metallisaurus again. On the bridge, Divatox is wondering how to get rid of the Phantom Ranger. Havoc points out that what they really want to do is steal the Phantom Ranger's power ruby. Havoc says it's impossible. Divatox says nothing's impossible. Divatox has apparently forgotten that teaching such pablum is Dimitria's job. She orders Havoc to get the ruby. Credits! They're slightly updated!

Back at school, Cassie finds a black envelope in her locker. Inside is a blank note card. Suddenly, it flashes a message that tells her to go to the park. She thinks it might be from the Phantom Ranger, and so can't say no. She heads to the park and finds the Phantom Ranger....who is actually General Havoc in disguise. He summons some of his robotic troops as well. She tries to morph, but Havoc is able to get vines to wrap up her arms. I didn't know he could do that. He teleports her away.

At the juice bar, Bulk and Skull are still doing the monster tour. They want the Rangers to dress up as the Power Rangers (remember, Bulk and Skull don't know who the Rangers actually are) and show up during the tour. Bulk and Skull have also created some fake Ranger costumes. I personally don't think they look that bad, but since the Rangers laugh at them, I have no choice but to conclude that they are. Bulk and Skull also insult Justin a bit. Good ol' Bulk and Skull. The Rangers decline. The Rangers then figure out that Cassie is missing. They head to the Power Chamber, but still can't find her. They get hailed. It's General Havoc. He reveals that he has captured Cassie, and will turn her to stone unless he gets the Phantom Ranger's power ruby. The Rangers point out that they couldn't even if they wanted to. Havoc points out that Phantom Ranger is probably listening in on this conversation anyway. Meanwhile, Justin has an idea that he whispers to Alpha 6. He's able to locate the source of the transmission. Dimitria points out that it's almost certainly a trap. That knowledge in no way dissuades T.J..

They arrive at the cave and a fight scene breaks out. Highlights include T.J. shooting Rygog in the head with his blaster. The two sides fight over control of the dust that will turn Cassie to stone. And....Rygog does it, Cassie is now made of stone! The Rangers haven't been doing too well these past few episodes. Having done as much as they can do, the villains withdraw, leaving the Rangers with StoneCassie. T.J. asks if StoneCassie can hear him. Oh, T.J.. Carlos claims that they did everything they could. Well, everything except not fail, I guess. But, wouldn't you know it, the Phantom Ranger shows up. He rushes over, but Carlos rather emphatically tells him that it's over, and that nothing can be done. Phantom Ranger reveals that his power ruby can bring her back to life. It works, but then it's revealed that General Havoc is really in disguise as Cassie and steals the ruby and the Phantom Ranger. T.J. and the team have managed to fuck up again.

Back at the Power Chamber, the Rangers learn that the ruby is incredibly powerful and that they don't know where it is. T.J. vows to find another way. In space, Divatox is taunting Cassie with the ruby. General Havoc brings in the powerless Phantom Ranger. Divatox is about to unmask him when Cassie escapes from the Piranhatrons that had been holding her. Phantom Ranger tells her to escape. Cassie does, which I suppose is consistent with her character. Divatox orders Havoc to crush the Rangers.

Cassie lands back on Earth, and Bulk and Skull are still giving the monster tour. They introduce the tour group to their fake band of Power Rangers. The tour group doesn't buy it, but then Bulk is saving by Metallisaurus attacking Angel Grove again. If I may digress for a minute, would you really want to go on a tour that promised the appearance of a monster? I mean, that's kind of like going on a tour of San Francisco that promises an earthquake. The Rangers are able to find Cassie, and she's worried about the Phantom. Havoc shows up to redirect her worry towards his giant metal war machine. The Metallisaurus now has a new cannon in its chest. Havoc shoots some eyebeams at the Rangers. T.J. calls for the Rescue Megazord, now on sale at your local Venture! The Rescue Zords try to attack individually, but the time for such things has past. Also, Metallisaurus is holding a cage containing the Phantom Ranger. The Rangers transform their Zords into "high stance" mode, which just means that each individual Zord turns into a man-shaped form. T.J. grabs the cage and lets the Phantom Ranger out. Cassie dismounts and offers to take the Phantom Ranger to a safe place....with scented candles and dimmed lights, I'll bet. The Phantom Ranger tells her to use the damn Rescue Megazord already.

The Rangers keep fighting him in their individual Zords, it does not go well for them. They tussle for a bit, until T.J. manages to catch one of the shells that Metallisaurus has been shooting out of his chest. That knocks him back and the Rangers finally, finally, finally bring out the Megazord. The Rescue Megazord summons a gatling gun and a bazooka from its carrier. Metallisaurus can't compete with that, and gets blown up but good.

The Phantom Ranger is already gone by the time the Rangers get back to his cage, and the Rangers remember that they didn't actually win because Divatox still has the ruby. General Havoc leaves, but vows he'll return with yet another Metallisaurus. Or something else, he could always try something else. Anyway, Divatox has the power ruby and a plan.

Back on Earth, the Rangers are talking about that test from the beginning of the episode. Alpha 6 contacts them to tell them the urgent news that she still doesn't know where the Phantom Ranger is. Down in sewers, Phantom Ranger is narrating his "final log entry" about how he's totally going to die without his power ruby. To Be Continued!
