Passing the Torch, Part Two

Power Rangers Turbo, Episode 19

Original Airdate: 9-11-1997

First, a moment of silence for all those who were Power Ranger fans in 1997, whose hearts were about to break over who was leaving the cast and, more tragically, who wasn't.

Last time: Divatox's mother told her to bump off Tommy, some suspiciously racially diverse teenagers showed up in Angel Grove and the Rangers had the mother of all inconclusive fight scenes.

Tanya, Adam and Justin are running from Flamebot, and Tanya picked her morpher up offscreen because they forgot to film it and they couldn't go back and reshoot it. They all morph. I think the monster's name might actually be Flamebite, but I'm not going to go back and change it. The Rangers blast him with their power weapons, but to no avail, Flamebot shoots fire at them. Adam spies a fire bucket. Adam douses the monster in water, which apparently hurts him greatly. Flamebot retreats. Credits! Goodbye old credit sequence!

T.J., Kat, and Cassie are still fighting Piranhatrons. Tanya, Adam and Justin show up, and the Piranhatrons know where this is headed and retreat. For the sake of secret identity protection, the Power Rangers pretend not to know Kat as she tells them that Tommy has been captured. Cassie offers to stay, Kat would prefer that she didn't.

At Divatox's cave, Tommy has been trussed up with some chains. Divatox wants to make him suffer because of the events of the past 18 episodes and the movie. Tommy is defiant. Mama D shows up and is pleased at her child's successes. Tommy call her ugly. Mama D wants him dead, she suggests the vortex of eternal doom and sorrow. Doom AND sorrow, Mama D does not mess around, even though eternal doom is technically impossible because doom is a state where one is headed towards destruction, and cannot be doomed unless they eventually die. Hence, doom must be transitory. Divatox agrees to dump him there nonetheless. Mama D summons the vortex right under Tommy's feet. We also learn the final resting place of Divatox's father. The moral of today's episode is clearly not to cheat on your wife if she can call upon eldritch terrors beyond human comprehension, which is, after all, an important lesson to learn.

So, Divatox lowers him into the pit and he suffers for all eternity.

Okay, what really happens is that, being hopelessly addicted to ridiculously inefficient timers, she puts some peanut butter on the rope holding Tommy above the vortex and gets a rat to start chewing on it.

In the Power Chamber, the remaining Rangers watch as Flamebot rampages through the city, already at giant-size. The Rangers are concerned. Dimitria decides to add to their concern by showing off an ominous hourglass she had kept hidden behind a door. Dimitria gives them notice of termination. Probably not the best time to do so, but sure. They morph...for the last time...and head out.

The national guard is evacuating the city, we will never see them do this again. The Rangers show up to stop him. Flamebot shoots fire at them. Adam and Tanya go off to evacuate people as Justin and Kat stare down the monster.

Elsewhere, T.J. and Cassie are raving about meeting the Power Rangers. Apparently, when T.J. was a kid, he wanted to be a Power Ranger. That seems slightly anachronistic. Cassie wanted to be like Tina Turner. That also seems anachronistic. T.J. finds the tracks of the monster that took Tommy. Cassie really doesn't want to get involved. T.J. goes off alone. The rats continue to bite through Tommy's ropes.

In the city, Ashley (remember, the cheerleader...no...well, you'd better remember fast) is helping the evacuation, as is Carlos. Divatox is gloating, but decides to send some Piranhatrons as an insurance policy. Justin and Kat fight some Piranahtrons, who, with their loss, drop to 1-67 against the Rangers. T.J. is following the tracks up to a cliff. Cassie is already there, because her ancestors also invented teleporting.

At the Power Chamber, Alpha 6 worries about the Rangers completing their "ultimate mission" before they get canned. Dimitria isn't particularly concerned, because she's a total bitch. T.J. and Cassie arrive at the cave where Tommy is being held. Tommy continues to sink downward to the tautologically impossible. Meanwhile, Ashley and Carlos bring some kids to the juice bar. Lt. Stone checks in as part of his contractual obligations. T.J. and Cassie happen upon Tommy, Tommy tells them to get out of the cave. More Piranhatrons show up. More Piranhatrons get beaten up. T.J. and Cassie save Tommy, and are therefore entitled to his job. They all exit the cave.

Back in the city, the Rangers are still fighting yet more Piranhatrons. Tommy shows up and it's time for one last ride in the Turbo Megazord. They kill that monster dead, and that'll be that for the original Turbo Rangers. Alpha 6 is worried that the Rangers aren't going to make it back to the Power Chamber in time. Dimitria says disorder and confusion will abound....somehow. Adam and Tanya briefly appear to Carlos and Ashley in a rather confusing scene.

Divatox is curled up in her bed when Mama D shows up to rub it in. Down at the Power Chamber, the hourglass has run out, Dimitria is displeased the Rangers cut so close. What's she going to do, double-fire them? And just like that, it's time for the ceremony. They head to an oddly rock-strewn chamber. Zordon and Alpha 5 show up to confirm that, indeed, Dimitria does have hiring and firing power. The Rangers are now too old to be Power Rangers, and are mustered out of service. Apparently, Dimitria is awful enough to have made the Rangers hire their own replacements.

Dimitria introduces the new Power Rangers, and at least I don't have to deal with Justin anymore. T.J. is now Red Ranger, Cassie is Pink, Ashley is Yellow and Carlos is Green. Wait....that's one short. No, don't this to me, show, don't do it. Each of the old Rangers has to say something nice to their successors, despite the fact that only Adam has actually spent any real time with his replacement. Justin complains that he's being left out of the firing ceremony. I am also upset with that. Dimitria announces that Justin will continue on as the Blue Ranger. Fuck. Dimitria gives some speech. Show Over!

Next Episode: Justin's still around and I'm bitter!
